EvaluationHow effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?
During the course of the this project I have attempted to make strong bonds and connections through idea’s and themes in all of my products. It is important that these links are easily established by the audience and can be found in all products. As the major product as well as my first completed task ,the short film will dictate the conventions that the poster and film review are based around. These idea’s will be continually used through out all of my products.
The colour black is an important feature and theme through out my products. By repeated use of the colour back it reinforces the darkness and the horror of the piece. An example of the use of the colour black is the repeated fade out added during the editing process. The colour of the background on the poster is also a jet black tone. The headers on the short film review are also back in order to tie all of these components together. It reinforces the importance of the horror genre to the piece and how evil and unnatural the acts being committed are. These are the reasons that I chose the colour black to be one of the identifying features of this project. The repetition of colour is also carried on by the filters put on the characters of Kathy and Rhys on the poster, and the colours being worn by the characters within the narrative. The red filter that is placed on Kathy is reinforced within the piece by the red jacket that Rhys is wearing. This also continues with the purple/blue filter that is placed of Rhys. In the short film the dark blue features of Lucy’s costumes . The connection of colours and symbolism is important to represent the strong danger and emotions of the piece but also the contrasts between the characters. By using these colours through out it enforces their importance to the brand as well as the plot.
One of the most stringent themes carried out in all of my productions is the number two. The number two is crucial to the entire concept of the piece. There are always two choices to make . This is the premise of the entire short film. The poster design contains only two people and so do the images used within the film review. By subtle repetition of the basic pattern of two, it becomes ingrained in the audiences mind and helps to advertise the film but also should aim to keep the moral message of the piece in their thoughts for longer. Simple concepts are often those which are easiest to remember. This being the title of work any reference to it are important if it is to become popular or a success.
Working on the same concept as the repetition of the two images on screen the repetition of font helps to create an identity for a project as at first glance it can be recognised to belong to a certain group. By using the same font consistently it enforces the message that comes with the font. In this case, the difficulty in deciding one thought against another. If I was going to create a strong identity for this project the font would also be used in the film review. The reason behind my decision against this was that after research I discovered that the magazine I was writing my review around use their own typography instead of one designed for the film. With this being the case I kept the font on the two products that were liable to be the most viewed and then made sure that each time the font was legible and clear.
Another combination of features that were carried across from my main task into my ancillary tasks was the use of the same images and dialogue. Within the film review it is quoted that “You should think carefully” by constantly repeating the key phrases and ideas it means that the context is extended across all three products as well as the fact that it reinforces the concept behind the short films narrative. Quotes help the audience derive different interpretations and therefore by featuring them in other tasks it widens the boundaries for the target audience and their reaction to it. The same concept works behind the use of the repeated image. Images are more likely to be remembered more than any other feature within an article or on a poster, so by repeating images it reinforces the ambiguity and danger the characters are in. It also advertises the genre and the target audience in a subtle method.
Creating Synergy is an important concept to consider when producing this project. By releasing the products at around the same time, it allows for the maximum advertisement space to occur. This concept would be more effect on a product design to bring in vast amounts of income. Although this maybe the case advertising in a variety of formats such as posters and film reviews would be important in getting the message of the video across; as this is the main feature of a short film for most directors. By connecting themes and ideas from my short film it has allowed be to produce a variety of products that detail the importance of combining concepts for success.
