10 most common mistakes when working from home

Editor's Notes

  • #3: Lets just go back in time before I begin we saw mainly people in offices and the people working at home were normally fairly well set up. But then the biggest experiment in homeworking started with the arrival of Covid, and suddenly all bets were off – with just about any weird set up qualifying as a workstation. This would have been ok if after 3 months we’d all returned to the office (lets face it most of us thought that this would be the case) but now almost 3 years on people are still working badly at home. My name is Jo Blood, and for the last 17 years I have been a workstation assessor, and I have seen just about every shape and size of person, and every weird and wacky workstation.
  • #4: Let me give you an example of one of the most ingenious workstations I have ever seen, what you might not be able to see is this is actually a chest of drawers, with the top drawer pulled out to rest the keyboard on, and another holding a book to put the mouse on then sitting two feet away on the bed and stretching over to type. This would have almost been acceptable if this was at the start of the pandemic, but this was from 3 months ago So why do people work badly at home? 1min 20 secs
  • #5: We are seeing are seeing an increase in people with musculoskeletal issues (that’s things like backache, neckache, and RSI) rising and worst still being commonplace in younger and younger people? Lets do a quick show of hands, who here has experienced back ache, keep your hands up, neckache, keep them up, wrist or arm pain – Arms aching yet? Ok put them down. Did you know the human skeleton has approx. 270 bones at birth which fuse together to form about 206 bones in adulthood And you are currently crunching the 33 bones in the spine by sitting down, so have a think about your current position and see if you can give yourself a bit more support by moving your bottom back in chair or the wall, or if you’ve got no back support feel free to move around if you get stiff whilst I’m talking. (adjust this to suit people in the room). 53 seconds
  • #6: This is what we look like when we sit badly Strain on the neck, harder to breath, pressure on the wrists, tightening in the hips – I haven’t got time to go through all the medical conditions that sitting like this can cause, but lets just say none of it’s good. The problem is that no one teaches you how to sit, so I am here to give it a try, to correct habits formed over a lifetime in 20 minutes, And you are not alone – I’ve recruited some of my fellow presenters who have been brave enough to share their workstations, and expose themselves to a lifetime of nagging from me. Here is a whistle stop tour of the biggest crimes against ergonomics, and what it is doing to your body, and more importantly what to do about them.
  • #7: Jonathan Moore – Johnathan Moore Digital
  • #9: Guila
  • #10: Ok it’s difficult I know, not everyone wants or has the space for a proper office chair in their home – but long term this really is the best solution. If you can’t fit one in at the moment, then you can use cushions to make sure you’re sitting at the right height (remember elbows and forearms in line with the desk) and if when you’re sitting at the right height if your feet don’t reach the floor – use books or magazines to fill in the gap between your feet and the floor

  • #14: Vanda
  • #15: This is where your old friends – the cushion and the bookrest can help again. Cushion for back support Books as a temporary footrest
