Editor's Notes

  • #2: Introduction slide ---------------------------------------------- Greetings, Acknowledgements, Accolades, and Praise Describe purpose of presentation: To introduce students to SPAx, the new model for student professional activities worldwide
  • #3: Demonstrate need -------------------------------------- Refer to a personal experience where being professionally aware was beneficial Explain that in all professional situations, it’s not always about the depth of skill, but the breadth of skill that determine career success Rich Dad, Poor Dad: “Talented People are often just one skill away from great wealth” - What is the one skill they’re missing? (Hint: Professional Awareness) 4. This is where SPAx comes in
  • #4: - SPAx is an evolution of how IEEE encourage student professional awareness today. - Drawing from the rich history of SPAC and SPAVe, SPAx lowers the barrier to entry for new chapters to participate, while celebrating the innovative and creative ways our existing chapters encourage Student professional awareness. Student leaders from a branch can design a SPAx event, and receive support from IEEE (National Speaker, Partial funding, and Guidance) to execute their vision. ************* You can start off by saying the definition below: What is a SPAx? ************* Guiding Definition: A SPAx  is a Student Professional Awareness Experience that fosters professional growth and development through engaging activities and discussions exploring one or more key areas: (Next Slide) Career Development Professional integrity Personal Skills Engineers and Public Policy Leadership in Professional Organizations The Practice of Innovation The Art of Communication Humanitarian Grand Challenges
  • #5: The main requirement is that the Student Professional Awareness event is centered on one or more of the following topics, approved by the SPAx coordinator in your area. We also ask that students submit a formal application and a short after-event report that we will publish to the SPAx website.
  • #6: We have a new tagline in SPAx that summarizes what we’re trying to accomplish with SPAx; Engage: Engaging more student members to learn non-technical skillsets Explore: Explore new avenues of delivering content, suitable to the local community Experience: Design and create an experience that demonstrate your unique insight and talents
  • #7: This sounds like work! (It is) But the rewards are plentiful. Professional Jobs in Engineering are becoming increasing competitive, and having unique interpersonal skills or perspective can make a huge difference.
  • #8: - We’ve learned in our experience that the best Student Professional Awareness events are done by students who took ownership of the event, tailoring it to suit the students they are serving. You (The student leaders) are the IEEE members best equipped to create a meaningful impact to the students in your community.
  • #9: Here are some examples from other chapters, and what they did with SPAx on their campus. The “x” in SPAx is a variable. It could be shaped as a conference with an invited expert speaker, a series of activities focused on honing career skills, a social event to foster networking and team building skills, a design contest, a tech talk, or any other format, as long as they focus on one or more of the following eight areas. You decide what works for your chapter, and IEEE gives you the support to implement your ideas. The x-factor gives you the freedom and ability to decide what you want to do for your local campus and students.
  • #10: There are 5 simple steps to get started with setting up your first SPAx. Ask them, “What experience do you want to create?” Walk through the steps one at a time and go through the process. Emphasize STEP 2 making a good connection with their SPAx coordinator because they will be their best friend and support. Be sure to tell them the different options in STEP 4 because funding is the hardest part to understand – and free speakers are the easiest way to get started. In STEP 5, tell them to Have Fun! Because if they’re having fun, then the students will too, and then make sure you mention to tell US how they did so we can write a great blog article on them on the site!
  • #11: - We really hope you’ll consider getting in touch with a SPAx coordinator to discuss how you can create a SPAx event at your school. - With your help, we can bring professional awareness to all of our student members Say something along the lines of: “X MARKS THE SPOT… so how will YOU make YOUR mark?” You can make the difference, you can be the change you want to see in the world. It starts with you and your local student branch.
  • #12: If internet is available, please visit the webpage. Please describe the webpage: It has more details about the program and its benefits Information on how to get in touch with a coordinator Stories from other chapters to reference from If the internet is particularly slow, it may be advisable to load the webpage in advance so as to keep the presentation smooth.
