WHEN KENYA WAS A BRAND

When Kenya was a Brand, it was called the city under the sun, children had playgrounds, and
together they played Banta, Bubblygan, Kati, and all the parents in the neighborhood
treated every child as if they were their own, pinches and chapati’s included.

When Kenya was a brand, Blueband, Patco, Kimbo and Lady Gay were brands we were loyal
to. We also knew the shopkeeper by name, and we knew how to ask our parents for an extra
tongolo (tencent) for sukaringuru if you grew up in the countryside or Puru’s if you were a
city child.

When Kenya was a brand, Uganda was at war, and we prayed that God would continue to
guard the peace that we now know we took for granted.

When Kenya was a brand, Safari Rally was the biggest, most loved national event, and
Patrick Njiru was a role model to many. KipchogeKeino was a star and Robert Wangilla was
adored.

When Kenya was a brand, we drank juice. It was called Treetop. If you were from a rich
family, you had freshly squeezed juice.

When Kenya was a brand, we knew and sang the national anthem like the prayer it is.

If Kenya was a brand today…

Think ICT, think golf, Think real estate, Think tourism, Think entrepreneurs…

What we would do, to get that brand back…
