Karachi Vocational Training Centre (KVTC) has been empowering intellectually challenged individuals since 1991 by providing them vocational skills and job opportunities, leading to improved confidence and social integration. The center aims to rehabilitate over 140 trainees and secure well-paying jobs for 20 graduates annually while facing challenges like financial constraints and a waiting list of over 1800 students. KVTC's achievements include significant contributions to special education in Pakistan, participation in the Special Olympics, and providing comprehensive rehabilitation services to intellectually challenged individuals.

- 1. - 2. Irfan His life after KVTC’s Ahmed Intervention: Joined the centre in 1994. Almost Immediate positive Major Issues Before response to the environment KVTC: Found his confidence & self-esteem by excelling in various vocational skills Suffered from moderate Intellectual Disabilities further impeded by Speech Impairment Became more socially active, efficient, & able to perform well under pressure Under pressure from parents expectations who compared him Earned major accolades in Sports & Athletics with his normal siblings. Started his first paid job at a fast food restaurant in A tense relationship with his father, 2000 when Irfan couldn’t ‘measure up’. Currently working at a large local bakery that made him a better offer Socially maligned at school and home. Developed serious confidence & communication Happily married & content problems as a result.

Zehra After KVTC’s Intervention: Abbasi We targeted her social skills & confidence as key factors to be improved first Major Issues Before KVTC: With time, Zehra showed keen interest in Sports & Athletics activities & became one of the Leading Suffered from moderate Intellectual sports figures for Special Olympics Pakistan Disabilities 1995 - Represented Pakistan in the USA as part of Condition worsened due to tragic death of the Pakistan basketball team & won a Bronze medal father in a car accident. 2007 - Represented Pakistan in the China in the Intense behavioural problems created from World Games as part of the Pakistan Table Tennis an insecure environment at home that team. She won 1 Gold medal & 1 Silver medal included financial problems Successful Job Internships at British Council & Gul Was not showing any improvement after Ahmed Textiles PVT LTD. Currently working as spending time at many SEN schools in assistant teacher in 3 Skills: Grooming, Tailoring, & Karachi Machine Embroidery.
- 4. Saad After KVTC’s Intervention: Latif Joined KVTC in 2005. - 5. What is KVTC? KVTC® is a rehabilitation centre for Intellectually Challenged (IC) people. It imparts the knowledge and skills needed for children, teens, & adults with Learning difficulties (LD) &/or Mental Retardation (MR) gain success in the community as well as in their personal lives
- 6. What do we do? Since its establishment in 1991, KVTC has proved with unparalleled success that intellectually challenged people can learn trade, hold jobs, earn livelihoods and live independently Annual Objectives Secure well-paying jobs for at least 20 graduating trainees Provide rehabilitation for over 140 trainees at the centre & 20 in home-based programs improving their co-existence with their families & society in general To parallel the chances of an intellectually challenged person for employment with that of a regular person by raising awareness across society
- 7. What Kind of Jobs? By effectively utilizing the knowledge & expertise of: Senior doctors including Psychiatrists & Psychologists Special educators Philanthropists Legal professionals & Business leaders • that form KVTC’s General Body & convert them into ideas & activities that actually work for the 140 children & adults under our care.

Our Rehabilitation Program Each trainee’s IEP & IVP is designed by staff & other relevant people (educationalists, psychologists, psychiatrists, Special Educators, therapists, family) These Individualized Plans are then implemented primarily by KVTC trained staff, volunteers (including internees from universities), and the Trainee’s family

- 13. What have we done so far? Over 450 IC people have found gainful employment through our Job Placement services Over 10,000 IDPs given psychiatric treatment since 1993. Currently, 1200 patients from Pakistan’s earthquake & flood-affected areas are under our care Comprehensive rehabilitation services provided since 1991 that improved the lives of 2000 trainees (approximately) under our care & their families Enhanced employment opportunities for IC people by raising awareness throughout the country Won almost 1000 medals in Special Olympics

- 18. Is All of This Necessary? IC people are a significant 8% of Pakistan’s population This may rise due to high rates of inter-family marriages, lack of proper healthcare & awareness about prevention measures They are the most marginalized & vulnerable people in the country The barriers to education are widened when its comes to disabled or intellectually challenged children For an estimated 600,000 IC people in Karachi, there are only 30-35 SEN schools with a collective capacity of a mere 10-15000 people Despite a long history of SEN schools, Pakistan today still lacks facilities that provide disabled people with practical training & knowledge that would enable them to survive in the real world independently
- 19. Why Vocational Training (VET)? People with disabilities have the right to work, but they must be given the means to enable them to exercise that right. Global studies & our efforts have proved that disabled people are no less efficient or productive than anyone else. Disabled persons want and need to work to: • earn a livelihood • enjoy social contacts • gain self-esteem Throughout the world, inclusive VET is being realized as a crucial part of school curricula in response to global labour market needs

Urgent Needs KVTC, like other such organizations, is mostly reliant on charity and the economic downturn in Pakistan has hit us very hard, as our trainee sponsors, benefactors, & donors feel the financial pinch With ever-worsening economic conditions, our situation is only going to get worse, so we need help as soon as possible
- 23. Qualified SEN Teachers Qualified Personnel are integral to our success • SEN Teachers are trained to work with children and people who have learning difficulties/disabilities that make it harder for them to learn or access education • KVTC has the reputation of a ‘finishing school’ for new graduates and experienced teachers seriously wanting to pursue or advance their careers in special education. To maintain its high service standards, KVTC needs to be able to pay market level salaries & wages demanded by qualified SEN teachers
- 26. How Can You Help? Sponsor a trainee – PKR 14,323 (USD 159) per month • covers professional staff salaries, training material, transport, awareness activities (crucial for job placement), and overheads Sponsor a Special Educator – PKR 26,500 (USD 294) per month • Covers salaries, on-job training, transport, course material, workshops, and overheads Volunteer your time – You can: • Help out in academic classes or skill departments • Teach the children new skills • Help in awareness & fund-raising activities

Join our Awareness Campaign Formally initiated in 2007 with the help of Give2Asia Foundation Our continual endeavour to advance the acceptance & empowerment of intellectually challenged people in Pakistan Join us in activities like: Charity bazaars/exhibitions and Psychiatric Camps Concerts, Talent Shows & other Fund-raisers Reaching larger audiences through TV/Radio, print & other electronic media including the internet (social media) Celebrity Visits & Events Training workshops for Special Educators, caregivers, & other professionals Student Internship & Fund-Raising Projects
