• #9: For this Webinar, we are going to mainly concentrate on slide plates. Slide plates are a very cost-effective way to allow for movement of mechanical systems for very high temperatures and cryogenic temperatures as well. They are also suited for both high and low loads. We supply slide plates for a variety of applications including support of piping, heavy equipments such as pressure vessels, and structural members. The plates provide a surface with a low coefficient of friction which can be attached to a supporting structure This combination provides support while simultaneously allowing an object to move or slide freely along the supporting structure. Shown here are the five main materials used, which are: PTFE, 25% Glass Filled, Bronzphite ®, Marinite, Graphite and Stainless Steel.
• #10: Most designers use the “sandwich” concept, which is simply two slide plates one on top of another. Each slide plate is composed of two components: 1) metal backing plate, which is the “bun” of the sandwich and two 2.) a low coefficient friction material which is bonded to the metal backing plate The illustration to right shows a slide plate that is welded on top of one steel beam supporting another steal beam. When the top beam moves, it slides across the surface of the plate without contacting the supporting beam. The top half of the “sandwich” is bonded to the sliding beam, bottom half of “sandwich” to the supporting beam. Permits ease of installation
• #11: DO NOT, DO NOT, DO NOT….. DO NOT SAY TEFLON…. !!!!! The first material we will discuss is: PTFE, 25% glass filled slide plates are primarily used in low heat and high velocity conditions; however, this material can be used in high heat applications in conjunction with other materials. We also use this type of slide plate where there is high wear resistance, no surface treatments necessary or is unaffected by weather conditions. The slide plates you see in the background are used for cable trays that are located on a floating structure. They are used to reduce friction between the cable trays and the structural steel it is resting on. They are bonded to stainless steel backing plates that are bolted to this structure. Listed here are common applications for PTFE, 25% glass filled slide plates. DO NOT, DO NOT, DO NOT….. DO NOT SAY TEFLON…. !!!!! If you need it…. NOTE: PTFE, 25% Glass Filled: PTFE is the abbreviation for Polytetrafluoroethylene. PT&P uses PTFE filled with 25% Glass Fibers (by weight). Fillers improve the strength and durability.
• #12: We use our standard assembly for welding to mating surfaces, which is two units of three thirty-seconds of an inch thick (3/32 " ) PTFE, 25% glass filled bonded to one-eight inch (1/8 " ) carbon steel with a half inch (1/2 " ) lip for field tack welding. For higher load capacities, we use a full weld assembly, which is two units of three thirty-seconds of an inch thick (3/32 " ) PTFE, 25% glass filled bonded to indicated backing material with one-half inch (½ " ) lip all around for full welding. • #13: Starting from the left, you see F-Type variable spring supports that have PTFE, 25% glass filled slide plates welded to the top of the load flange. The slide plates will allow for translational movement. Next is forty-three inch (43 " ) angled pipe shoes with a slide plate welded to a carbon steel plate, then welded onto the shoe to allow movement of the pipe during expansion and contraction. And lastly, you see a 200 U-Type constant spring support with a slide plate welded to the load flange to reduce the friction between the constant load flange and the structure above the support. This constant also includes slide plates between the table and the frame of the constant to reduce the friction on the table and improve constant deviation.
• #14: Eight foot (8 ' ) long big ton variable spring assembly fabricated from carbon steel components with a painted finish designed for a local area refinery. The top of the load flange has three PTFE, 25% glass filled, slide plates. The base is ninety-six inches (96 " ) by eighteen inches (18 " ) and the installed height is twenty-four inches (24 " ). This big ton will be utilized to support heavy loads where a standard variable spring would be undersized. The big ton spring design includes an array of parallel coils within one frame to produce large load carrying capacity while maintaining the same spring rate. The assembly is designed to withstand an operating load of seventy-six thousand, eight-hundred pounds ( 76,800 lb. ) and has a downward travel of point eight-nine-four inches (0.894".) Prior to fabrication, each of the coils were individually tested to insure correct spring rate and load capacity. After fabrication, the entire assembly was tested throughout the entire load and travel range.
• #15: Here we show slide plates in conjunction with hold downs: The top right picture shows a hold down clamp with a PTFE, 25% glass filled lining and wedge supports for a forty-two inch (42 " ) pipe. The hold down and wedge supports are fabricated from A26 carbon steel and include a fabric pad which is exceptionally suited for vibration impact and declination The lower-left picture shows HD-2 hold down clamps that will be used to fit a sixteen inch (16 " ) pipe at an oil refinery in Michigan. This particular design is generally used on pipelines where there is a high temperature and great thermal movement requirements. Hold downs allow for axial movement while restraining lateral movement. The clamp and base plate are fabricated from carbon steel with PTFE, 25% glass filled, material bonded to the radius and plate. The palette of hold downs pictured here are designed to fit six (6 " ) to eight inch (8 " ) pipes at a chemical refinery in Louisiana. These particular clamps are fabricated from carbon steel with three and thirty-two inch (3/32 ") PTFE, 25% glass filled, bonded to the radius.
• #16: The coefficient of Friction of PTFE, 25% Glass Filled slide plates has been variously reported to be from point-zero-one to point-two (0.01 to 0.2). This depends on the surface preparation, loading, velocity, and the duration of the test. Bonding PTFE, 25% glass filled to metal increases the load capabilities in excess of two-thousand PSI (2000 PSI). This table shows the coefficient of friction due to the load applied. A conservative coefficient of point-one (0.1) can be used in PTFE, 25% glass filled slide bearing designs without considering sliding speed, temperature, or maintenance. The advantages of using this material are: 1. no setting problems, 2. low coefficient of friction, 3. no surface treatments, grouting or expensive mechanical attachment necessary, 4. chemically inert, 5. unaffected by weather conditions, 6. ability to absorb dirt and grit within itself and 7. self-aligning when used in conjunction with elastomeric backing pads.
• #17: Graphite can be used at higher operating temperatures and may be mechanically bonded or screwed where applicable. Bolted affords extra degree of holding strength, in the case of extremely high temperatures, the glue may weaken. The advantages of using this material are: 1. high operating temperature, 2. ease of installation, 3. no setting problems, 4. low coefficient of friction, 5. no surface treatments, grouting or expensive mechanical attachment necessary, 6. chemically inert, 7. unaffected by weather conditions, 8. has the ability to absorb dirt and grit within itself and 9. self-aligning when used in conjunction with elastomeric backing pads.
• #18: In our standard assembly, we use two units of Graphite bonded to one-eight inch (1/8 " ) thick carbon steel. One-forth inch (¼ " ) thick lip for field track welding. For full weld assembly, we use two units of Graphite bonded to indicated backing material with one-half inch (½ " ) lip all around for full welding. Graphite slide plates typically handle loads of up to two-thousand (2,000) PSI. and are designed for high operating temperatures of up to one-thousand degrees Fahrenheit (+1,000ºF).
• #19: We designed eighteen (18) Graphite slide plates that will be tack welded on top of big ton spring supports in a refinery to minimize frictional effects. The Graphite sheets are six millimeters (6 mm) and twelve millimeters (12 mm) thick and the overall dimensions are three-eights inch by nineteen and eleven-sixteenth inches (3/8 " x 19-11/16 " x 19-11/16 ") and three-eights inch by sixty-one inches by sixty-one inches (3/8 " x 61 " x 61 ") .
• #20: Top sheet of graphite measures a half inch by eleven and a half inches by one-hundred and fifteen and a half inches (½ " x 11 ½ " x 115 ½ ") Includes a bottom sheet of graphite with the same dimensions but only one-forth inch (¼ " ) thick Each individual graphite sheet is bonded to a hot dipped galvanized backing plate A half inch (½ ") lip all around for full welding Designed for one-thousand degrees Fahrenheit (1,000 ºF) 9 ½ feet long
• #21: Bronzphite is best suited for high loads, low velocity applications and in places where the use of oil or grease is undesirable or unfeasible. The area that is utilized can reach temperatures up to five-hundred degrees Fahrenheit (500 ° F). Bronzphite is maintenance free and self lubricating where the lubrication does not deteriorate with wear; therefore, it has a high wear resistance; as well as, prevents accumulation of dust and debris. Advantages include: self-lubricating components and maintenance free Explain the circular design of the graphite
• #22: The Bronzphite® slide plates shown here are constructed from graphite and phosphorus bronze There were designed for up to five-hundred degrees Fahrenheit (500ºF) temperatures and a total travel of up to thirty inches (30 " ) The dimensions rang from three inches by three inches to six inches by thirty-six inches (3" x 3" to 6" x 36 " ) Framework is fabbed to encompass…
• #23: Here you see a project we completed that included seventy-five (75) Pipe Shoe and Bronzphite® Slide assemblies for an oil refinery in Texas. Each assembly consists of two pipe clamps, a base plate and a three by three inch (3" x 3") Bronzphite® slide plate with graphite impregnated bronze. The shoes ranged in sizes from eighteen to twenty-four inches (18" -24") and are fabricated from A387 alloy steel. The are designed for nine-hundred and sixty-five degrees Fahrenheit (965ºF) and two-inches (2") of horizontal travel.
• #24: Marinite is a higher density insulation formed from Calcium Silicate, which is light weight, has a low bulk density, a low thermal conductivity, a high temperature and chemical resistance. We generally provide Marinite as a rectangular slide plate assembly consisting of a Marinite insulator block sandwiched between a stainless steel top and bottom plate Benefits Include: - Facilitates use of PTFE, 25% glass filled material on high-temperature lines. - Marinite being a high load bearing insulation material is ideal for the dynamic loading conditions.
• #25: Marinite allows for the use of PTFE, 25% glass filled, as the sliding surface for lines with high operating temperatures and high dynamic loading. It protects the PTFE, 25% glass filled material by acting as a barrier to heat transfer. It has so far been used for power plants in high energy systems like SHP and SIP. It could potentially be used wherever there are top, bottom or lateral movements the point support. Compact configuration providing sliding and insulation properties

• #31: When Welding : Place protective covering on PTFE, 25% Glass Filled or Graphite for protection against damage. If a full weld is desired, use a similar pattern of welding until a full weld is obtained. A full weld will help prevent seepage of water between the PTFE, 25% Glass Filled or graphite bearing and the support structure.) Avoid overheating, which may destroy the bonding of the PTFE, 25% Glass Filled or graphite to the base plate. Installation in Concrete : Secure top and bottom elements together with paper adhesive tape Then attach the bottom element anchor bolts with wire to the form After the bottom pour is made, repeat on top element During the first expansive cycle, the tape will break
• #32: Now lets go over additional products manufactured by PT&P and subsidiaries. Shown here are Engineered Spring Supports: Variables use coiled springs to support a load and allow movement The resistance of the coil to a load changes during compression, which is why these devices are called “variables” There are many different designs for variable supports, we use A through G to describe seven different physical connections to the supporting structure. A-E and G are hangers suspended from structural members and type-F is a base support that rest on the supporting surface. All our variables are available in short springs, standard springs, double springs, triple springs or quadruple springs. Big ton springs are custom designed to meet load and travel requirements for very large loads using a multiple coil system. Usually a base-mounted support that can be designed with slide plates for lateral pipe movement. The height, width and length are also custom designed to meet space requirements.
• #33: Pictured here are custom designed Constant Spring Supports. Constants are used when the load variability between the hot and cold loads exceed twenty-five percent (25%), and/or around sensitive rotating equipment where a load variation could be harmful. The first two pictures on the top left show Big Ton “D” and Big Ton “T” Upthrust Constants. The Type-D constant is twenty-six inches (26 ") in height, has a total design travel of five inches (5 " ) and load capacity of fifty-thousand and twenty-two pounds (50,022 lb.) The Type-T constant is sixteen-point-five inches (16.5 " ) in height, has a total design travel of four inches (4 " ) and is designed for a load capacity of seventy-five thousand (75,000 lb.) and sixty-seven thousand, four-hundred and sixty-four pounds (67,464 lb.) The constant pictured on the top-right is a 200 U-Type Upthrust Constant with a load capacity from ninety-thousand, seven-hundred pounds (90,700 lb.) to ninety-three thousand pounds (93,000 lb.). The large constant pictured on the bottom-right was designed for a geothermal plant and measures twelve feet (12 ' ) in length and four feet (4 ' ) in height. The customer required the constant load to be from twenty-five hundred (2,500) to fifteen thousand pounds (15,000 lb.) and required a travel of five (5) to forty-six inches (46 ") . Constant load test and cell travel tests were conducted on these constants.

• #38: 1—Hot Shoe: forty-two inches (42 " ) in diameter with three inches (3 " ) of insulation, this hot shoe is designed to carry its own weight, insulation and loads ranging from three-hundred and forty (340 lb.) to thirteen-hundred pounds (1,300 lb.). Due to high temperatures, we used calcium silicate as insulation and hot dipped galvanized the steel as a rust inhibitor. 2—Polyurethane Foam is kept in stock for the capability to fill orders faster 3—This is a picture of the PUF (polyurethane foam) molded into the shoe form 4—Hot Shoe: This hot shoe measures seventy-three inches (73 ") in diameter with five inches (5") thick insulation and can handle temperatures of up to twelve-hundred degrees Fahrenheit (1,200°F). This support is fabricated from carbon steel, calcium silicate and Firetemp®. Firetemp® is the insulation that carries the load of the pipe. In addition, calcium silicate was also used because it has a lower density, making it a better insulator. 5—Cold Shoe Anchors 6—Stainless Steel Shoes with Permali
• #39: Our U.S. Bellows division specializes in all types of expansion joints. 1 st picture is of a Thick Wall Flanged and Flued Head Expansion Joint that measures seventy-eight inches (78") in diameter. This expansion joint is cold formed, heat treated and painted with one coat of shop primer. The weld ends are beveled and drainage plugs were installed in the crest of the bellows. To the right of it is a eighteen inch (18") single metallic expansion joint fabricated with three-hundred pound (300 lb.) stainless steel raised face slip flanges. (design pressure: 403 PSI, design temperature: 200 °F) Next row, we have a sixty-six inch tied universal expansion joint designed to carry hot gas up to temperatures of 1022 °F and pressure up to five (5) PSIG. (Design movements: four inches (4 ") lateral and four-point-five inches (4.5") axial compression) To the right of that is a fifty-four inch (54") pressure balanced elbow turbine crossover expansion joint. The bellows were refurbished on a rush basis in just one week during a power plant outage. And lastly, you see another tied universal expansion joint. This expansion joint has 321 stainless steel bellows, 304L stainless steel pipe and has a nominal pipe size of sixteen inches (16")
