Sociology
The word Sociology is combination of two words:
“Socius” a Latin word which means Society. “Logos” a
Greek word which means study or advanced study.
So Sociology means science of society or study of society.
“The study of development, structure, and functioning
of human society; the study of social problem”.

Meaning of Value in Sociology
The word value is derived from Latin ‘valere’ that
mean ‘to be strong’.
PHILOSOPHICAL MEANING:
A value is directly related to a view point or
thought.
General conception of “the good”, ideas about the
kinds of ends that people should purse throughout
their lives and throughout the many different
activities in which the engage.

Definition:
HENDERSON:
It has been pointed out that man acts to satisfy his wants, anything
which satisfies a human want becomes thereby a value. To say that
our conduct is motivated by our value is another way of saying that we
act to satisfy our wants’.
INTERNATIONAL ENCYCLOPEDIA OF ETHICS:
Culturally defining standard by which people assess desireability,
godness and beauty, and that serve as broad guideline for social
living. Honesty, truthfulness, cleanliness.

Classical Sociologists and Values:
Comte and Emile Durkheim:
Sociology’s job was to discover the truth about how
society worked and to improve human life.
Sociologists would be able to say with scientific certainty
what was best for society.
Max Weber:
He believed he had discovered the truth about society’s
future and the inevitability of classless society.

Chracterstics of Value:
1. Values may be specific and may be more general.
2. Values are different from culture to culture.
3. Values are stable.
4. Values are learnt.
5. Values are part of our personalities.

Classification of Value
Values can be classified into two
broad categories:
1. Individual values
2. Collective values
Values can also be’ categorised
from the point of view their
hierarchical arrangement:
1. Intrinsic values
2. Instrumental values

1) The Theoretical

3) The Aesthetic
4) The Social
5) The Political
6) The Religious

Functions of Value:
» The main functions of values are:
1. Values play an important role in the integration and fulfilment of man’s basic
impulses and desires in a stable and consistent manner appropriate for his
living.
2. They are generic experiences in social action made up of both individual and
social responses and attitudes.
3. They build up societies, integrate social relations.
4. They mould the ideal dimensions of personality and range and depth of culture.
5. They influence people’s behaviour and serve as criteria for evaluating the
actions of others.
6. They have a great role to play in the conduct of social life.
7. They help in creating norms to guide day-to-day behaviour.

Importance of Value:
ǒ Regulate our day-to-day behaviour.
ǒ Give Ideals and Objectives.
ǒ They express moral imperatives.
ǒ It ends to which we act.
ǒ They are the basis of our judgments.

Developing Values Through Programs:
1. Celebration of national festivals.
2. Social service programs.
3. Emphasis on the unity of all religious, harmony among
communities and national integration.
4. Community prayer in the school.
5. Cultural and recreational programs.
6. Health and cleanliness programs (Polio, UNICEF,
SaafPani).

Conclusion
Values are collective conceptions of what is considered good,
desirable, and proper or bad, undesirable, and improper in a culture.
Values are Specific, Different, Stable which are learnt who affect
our Personality.
It can be classified basically into two categories: Intrinsic and
Instrumental, broadly in: Theoretical, Economic, Aesthetic, Social,
Political, Religious.
Value build up Societies, Individual Behaviour and Personality to
be called as ‘GOOD’.
It give Ideals, Objectives to regulate our day-to-day behaviour as
well as base for our Judgment.
