SEGMENTATION 
Strings, Snippets & Code View 
Version 1.0 - October 17, 2013
Parsing 
(2) Strings: Smartling extracts strings from the captured content based on 
paragraph markers found in the file. Those mark ers vary depending on the file 
type. 
(3) Segments: Strings are parsed into segments, defined by end of sentence 
punctuation markers, i.e. periods, semicolons, interrogation points. 
(4) Snippet: Segments are divided into snippets based on formatting, e.g. bold, 
italic, hyperlinks, etc. 
(1) Content: Smartling captures the content of each file uploaded

It makes it easier to re-order 
a translation whether for 
formatting or linguistic reasons.

In the translation interface segments and/or snippets are translated individually. 
They can also be re-ordered. 
(1) Segments are extracted from a string 
(2) Merge segments: Click on 
(3) Snippets within a segment are 
highlighted in blue 
(4) Copy a segment or snippet: Click on 
(5) Target field: enter a Snippet 
translation and use Tab or Enter to move 
to the next Snippet

(6) Context: See the translation in 
context as it is entered in the target field 
(7) Re-order snippets: Click and drag 
(8)Code view: let’s you manage and 
preview spaces

Manage leading, trailing, or unique 
space conventions from the 
translation interface: 
(A) Select Manually manage spaces 
between translation fields. 
(B)Go back to the translation target 
field then add or delete spaces to alter 
the formatting of the target language.

As you translate a segment, snippets are highlighted in blue. Each snippet must be 
translated into its own target field.

INCOMPLETE TRANSLATION 
ERROR 
When a target field is left incomplete, 
translators are prompted to go back to 
the Translation Interface and complete 
all the required fields.

To override the error message and exit
