This lesson plan aims to help students build background knowledge about viewpoints on segregation and racism during the Civil Rights Movement. Students will participate in a jigsaw activity where they read excerpts from texts representing different perspectives from the era. They will analyze the viewpoints and complete graphic organizers as they read individually. Then, students will discuss their texts in small groups, summarizing and comparing viewpoints. The teacher will assess students' reading comprehension, discussion skills, and analysis of perspectives through their graphic organizers, small group work, and whole class discussion.
