Company’s Backgroud
Albassami International Group is considered one of the biggest companies
specialized in vehicle transportation in the Middle East.Its activity started
about 38 years ago, since 1968.This company has a variety of a good grip
of activities which mentioned as below.
The activities are:-
i. all kinds of vehicle transportation services
ii. Transportation of goods and supplies
iii. Special transportation services (VIP)
iv. Trucks and vehicle maintenance and repair centre

Summary
According to this case study, at the present, the group is operating
all over the Kingdom and extends through out the Gulf Cooperation
Council (GCC) countries, Syria, Lebanon and Jordan. More than
1,000 shipping contract, including 2,000 to 2,500 bills of lading daily
occurred between the main branches. Albassami used Shipping
Information System to conduct their business process. The system
is based on clustered Dell servers running Windows 2003 and
connected to over 270 Windows XP clients which Sybase Adaptive
as a server, whereas client use SQL anywhere.

The Shipping Information System maintains all the
sender information and also records the client data, and
holds maintenance information, and provided standard
report to top management. All businesses process are
facilitated by shipping system, and the knowledge
extracted from the central database has enabled the
managements to make sound investment and
operational decisions.

Question 1. What systems are described here ? What valuable
information do they provide?
There are two systems described in Albassami Group which has
implemented such as:-
a. Database Management Systems (DMS)
The database management systems used as the backbone of the
systems is Sybase Adaptive server, whereas clients use SQL
anywhere.
There are replication between the server at HQ and the client’s
branches.

Throughout the replication, branches’ data is sent to the
server and aggregated to create most updated database
version, and then sent back to the branches.
This means every branch has the most recent version of
client list, trucks’ availability, and new shipping contracts
so that any customer is able to deal with any branch at
any time.

b. Shipping Information System
Maintains all the sender information such as:-
i. the sent car
ii. The track number
iii. The sender and receiving branches,
iv. Sends SMS message to the client
acknowledging the arrival of the car

The system also record, the client’s data, and
holds maintenance information. The system
also enables standard reports to be provided
to top management and head sectors about
the productivity of each branch. The system
allowed a better audit on all drivers’
behaviour.

Question 2. What value did the IT/IS investments add to Albassami?
Here are amongst the values that The IT/IS investment add to Albassami:-
1. Enhance company performance and achieve better customer
services.
2. Helps the top management make a faster decision and reduce error
in decision making by using accurate data provided by the systems.
3. Proper performance and monitoring resulted in adequate
employees’ appraisals and consequently loyal staff.
4. Knowledge extracted from central database has enabled the
management team to make sound investment and operational decisions
and therefore helped the business maintain and its success and leadership
in Kingdom.

Albassami are able to:
i. confront with a lot of shipping contracts and bills of
lading daily between the main branches.
ii. Properly handle and control the endless number of daily
work options and orders related to these operations at
perfect level services without a robust computerized system.

iii. Expand operations with the introduction of its
new division of Express transportation in 2003, the
group owns and allocates 170 heavy duty, medium,
and light vehicles of various types for its door-to-
door courier services, which operate all over the
Kingdom, covering more than 45 locations.

Question 3. How did implementing the Shipping Information System
address the business needs and information requirements of
Albassami?
The business needs of Albassami such as proper recording of the sent
car, the truck number, the sender receiving branches. Standards
report, accurate identifications of needsw for different regions and
thus proper budget allocation. Albassami also needs a better audit on
all drivers’ behaviour.
By implementing Shipping Information System, all the information or
knowledge are extracted from the database use Sybase Adaptive
server. The systems records the client’s data, and holds maintenance
information.

Conclusion
Normally Albassami International Group is one of the biggest
companies in Middle East like the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The
place is dry dessert and great temperature extremes. Therefore
the people here have two choices either to drive or to fly due
one city to one city is very far, sometime a thousand
kilometers. Mostly people choose or prefer the second option
(to fly).This has created a market for a car transportation in
Saudi Arabia. Albassami is considered one the leading land
transporters in the Middle East. The operating of the business
extends throughout the Gulf Cooperation Council(GCC)
countries such as Syria, Lebanon and Jordan.

Almost everyday there are more than 1,000 shipping
contracts, including more than 2,000 bills of lading daily
between the main branches. Besides that, with the new
