Traditional 2-d Animation Production Techniques
Unit 34
• Learning outcome:
• 1.Understand the techniques of 2D animation.
• (P1, M1, D1)
• Starter: Using the handout provided, in pairs;
• List platforms where animated content is shown to
audiences.
• Match the platforms to the specific animations that
appear there.
• Identify audiences for the animations.
Traditional 2-d Animation Production Techniques
Unit 34
• What are we going to do today?
All of you will be able to identify where animation can be shown to
audiences.
Most of you will be able to research and explain 2D animation
and its techniques.
Some of you will be able to comprehensively explain the
techniques of 2D animation in an illustrated article with
examples consistently using subject terminology
correctly.
Traditional 2-d Animation Production Techniques
Unit 34
• E4 are hosting their online E4 ident competition for new and established animators. As part of
this competition you are required to produce a 10 seconds long ident animation with their logo,
following the E4 brands identity and style. In order to comply with their brief, you must use a 2D
animation technique, an animated character and the soundtrack provided by E4 in your final
ident animation. The theme, topic and software is your choice, as long as you stick to E4’s
requirements.
• For this challenge you are required to develop a short 2D animation with soundtrack.
Minimum duration - 10 seconds. The animation should be of a cartoon character, suitable for
ages 12+.
Traditional 2-d Animation Production Techniques
Unit 34
• Animation Techniques
• For Unit 34 Task 1 you need to research and explain 2D animation, its
history, techniques and development to gain and demonstrate an
understanding that can help in your creative decision making when creating
your own animation productions.
• To complete this task you are required to produce an illustrated magazine
article entitled ‘2D Animation’. Consider the presentation and layout of the
article by researching and being influenced by the layout of existing
magazine articles.
• The second article needs to explore Television Idents, their design and
purpose, as well as ident’s opportunities, limitations and creative
communication.
•
As these are magazine articles, you must think carefully about your layout
and design. Every page should include images, pull quotes and your article
should be written in a creative, fluent way.

Unit 34
• Animation is the
process of making
the illusion of motion
and the illusion of
change by means of
the rapid succession
of sequential images
that minimally differ
from each other so
that the human eye
sees only the motion.
Traditional 2-d Animation Production Techniques
Unit 34
• Animation Techniques-1: Flick books
• A flip book or flick book is a book with a
series of pictures that vary gradually from
one page to the next, so that when the
pages are turned rapidly, the pictures
appear to animate by simulating motion or
some other change.

• Task 1: Using the
sticky notes provided
you are to create an
animation using
between 20 and 30
images.

Unit 34
• Animation Techniques 2: Cel animation
• When someone says the word "cartoon," what
we usually imagine is cel animation. Cartoons
today rarely use the pure cel animation of the
past, instead employing computers and digital
technology to help streamline the process.
• A cel is a sheet of transparent cellulose acetate
used as a medium for painting animation
frames. It is transparent so that it can be laid
over other cels and/or a painted background,
then photographed. Look at the cel examples.
2-d Animation Production Techniques
Unit 34
• Working at first on paper, a
traditional cel animation team
will plan out and sketch the
animated frames (roughs) or
the key positions in a
sequence before sketching in
every frame of the sequence
(inbetweening). Each drawing
is then inked and coloured
onto transparent sheets or cels
- from which the technique
gets its name. The
transparencies are then
photographed, in sequence, on
top of a painted background.
Traditional 2-d Animation Production Techniques
Unit 34
• Sometimes numerous sheets are layered
on top of each other as more than one
character or object is moving. To give
perspective, multiple cels can be arranged
on separate planes in a technique called
multi-plane animation. Watch this video.
• Task 2: Look at the examples of
animation cels being distributed now.
Traditional 2-d Animation Production Techniques
Unit 34
• Animation Techniques 3:
Rotoscoping
…is
an animation technique
used by animators to trace
over motion picture
footage, frame by frame,
when realistic action is
required.
A horse's gallop traced, from a series
of photographs by
Eadweard Muybridge.
Traditional 2-d Animation Production Techniques
Unit 34
• The rotoscope technique was invented by Max
Fleischer in 1915, and used in his groundbreaking Out
of the Inkwell animated series (1918-1927) known simply
as "Fleischer Process" on the early screen credits, and
was essentially exclusive to Fleischer for several years.
The live-movie reference for the character, later known
as Koko the Clown, was performed by his brother (Dave
Fleischer) dressed in a clown costume.
• Originally conceived as a "short-cut" to animating, the
rotoscope process proved to be time consuming due the
precise and laborious nature required in tracing.
• Task 3: watch this video and make notes.

Unit 34
• Animation Techniques 4: Drawn on film
Also known as direct
animation or animation without camera, is
an animation technique where footage is
produced by creating the images directly
on film stock, as opposed to any other
form of animation where the images or
objects are photographed frame by frame
with an animation camera.
Traditional 2-d Animation Production Techniques
Unit 34
• There are two basic methods to produce animation directly on film. One
starts with blank film stock, the other one with black (already developed)
film.
• On blank film the artist can draw, paint, stamp, or even glue or tape objects.
Black film (or any footage) can be scratched, etched, sanded, or punched.
Any tool the artist finds useful may be used for this, and all techniques can
be combined endlessly.
• Large formats such as 70 or 35mm film may be preferred for their relatively
larger working area, but direct animation is done on 16 mm or even Super 8
mm film as well.
• Mothlight is an experimental short film by Stan Brakhage, released in
1963. The film was created without the use of a camera.
• In this short animation film, the "boogie" is played by Albert Ammons and
the "doodle" is drawn by Norman McLaren. Made without the use of a
camera, Boogie-Doodle is a rhythmic, brightly coloured film experiment.

• For Unit 34-Task 1 you need to research and explain 2D animation, its history,
techniques and development to gain and demonstrate an understanding that can help
in your creative decision making when creating your own animation productions. Use
and explain examples to aid in your explanation of the key areas.
•
To complete this task you are required to produce an illustrated magazine article
entitled ‘2D Animation’. Consider the presentation and layout of the article by
researching and being influenced by the layout of existing magazine articles.
• In your article, include any advantages and disadvantages you can think of.
• The article should be created through a combination of Photoshop and Google
Docs and the final Google document submitted via Turnitin.
• Use this session to begin your illustrated magazine article entitled ‘2D Animation’.
• Consider the presentation and layout of the article by researching and being
influenced by the layout of existing magazine articles.
