This document summarizes a study applying a fuzzy assessment model to evaluate operative groups in virtual educational forums. The model was developed by Ilan Chamovitz, Marcos da Fonseca Elia, and Carlos Alberto Nunes Cosenza. It has been successfully applied in formative assessment across several disciplines with some advantages and restrictions. A case study involved dividing post-graduation students into groups of 4-6 to discuss topics over a limited period via asynchronous communication and evaluating messages using the COPPE-Cosenza fuzzy model. Results found students could learn from observing others and the model provides a scalable solution for distance education assessment of large classes.
