Introduction • World Wide Web: a collection of interlinked multimedia documents , stored on the Internet and accessed using a common protocol (HTTP) • The inventor of the Web , Tim Berners-Lee, a British computer scientist and former CERN (European organization for nuclear research) employee • On 12 March 1989, Berners-Lee wrote a proposal for what would eventually become the World Wide Web • The first test was completed December 1990
- 4. Client/Server Architecture • Two-tier system : – Presents an interface to the user – Gathers information from the user, submits it to a server, then receives, formats, and presents the results returned from the server .

Client/Server Architecture (Cont.) • Three-tier, or Multi-tier system consists of three distinct pieces: – Client tier, or user interface tier, is the Web browser – Processing tier, or Middle tier, handles the interaction between the Web browser client and the data storage tier . – Data Storage tier, Stores data in database and returns requests presented by the processing tier .

Server-Side Scripting • Java is an object-oriented programming language , developed by Sun Microsystems in the 1990s. • designed to work across multiple software platforms, meaning a program written on Mac OS X, for example, could also run on Windows. • Used to develop enterprise level application and video games and mobile apps, as well as the Android operating system; • It can be employed to develop web based applications when used with JSP (Java Server Pages) • Java powers more than 200 million websites, including Google, Facebook, Amazon and ebay .

Server-Side Scripting (Cont.) • Python is a high-level, server-side scripting language for websites and mobile apps. • It was developed by Guido Van Rossum in 1991s. • It's considered a fairly easy language for beginners due to its readability and compact syntax, meaning developers can use fewer lines of code to express a concept than they would in other languages. • It powers the web apps for Instagram, Pinterest and Rdio through its associated web framework, Django, and is used by Google , Yahoo! and NASA .

PHP was developed in the 1995s • Open-source language which means that there are thousands of already built modules that can be modified to achieve the desired functionality. Also, there are hundreds of PHP platforms available such as Joomla, WordPress, and Drupal that allow you to develop websites. • PHP powers more than 200 million websites, including Wordpress, Digg, Yahoo and Facebook.

Server-Side Scripting (Cont.) • Ruby A dynamic, object-oriented scripting language for developing websites and mobile apps, was designed to be simple and easy to write. • It was developed by Yukihiro Matsumoto in the 1995s • Ruby powers Ruby on Rails, a web development framework on which numerous renowned websites including Github, Scribd, Yammer, Shopify, and Groupon have been developed.

Server-Side Scripting (Cont.) • C# belongs to the Microsoft’s family and was developed in 2000s to be the part of the first ever release of Microsoft’s .NET framework. • C# is very similar to Java in terms of capabilities. It has been said that C# combines the robustness of C++ with the advanced features of Java. Therefore, if you are good at Java, it is extremely easy to switch to C# and vice-versa. • C# is used to develop almost all types of software applications that come with Visual Studio IDE. If you are developing a web based application in ASP.NET, you will be required to code in C# or VB to write backend handling mechanism.

Client-Side Scripting • JavaScript is a client and server-side scripting language developed by Netscape that derives much of its syntax from C. • It can be used across multiple web browsers and is considered essential for developing interactive or animated web functions. It is also used in game development. • JavaScript interpreters are embedded in some Browsers extensions, Adobe Acrobat and Reader, and Adobe's Creative Suite. • JavaScript server side called Node.Js now powers some of famous web sites like Yahoo!, ebay.com, Linkedin.com .

While most often used to change the style of web pages and user interfaces written in HTML and XHTML. • CSS was first proposed by Håkon Wium Lie on October 10, 1994 . • Along with HTML and JavaScript, CSS is a cornerstone technology used by most websites to create visually engaging web pages, user interfaces for web applications, and user interfaces for many mobile applications. • CSS written in HTML file or in separated file .
