Some Considerations
10
Mobile phones will surpass PC as primary means of accessing internet in 2013
In 3 years from intro, tablet shipments have surpassed desktops & laptops
Over 165MM people have access to SharePoint
So we were not unique in looking for solutions
There are many companies and employees that face the same pain point
In the End
11
Sizeable investment in SharePoint
Support organization in place
Information security in place
Answer……Leverage SharePoint
But what about the usability on the mobile device………
12

Powerful collaboration tools
Common Criticisms
Usability
Adoption

Off-line use / mobile access
Consumer Apps like Dropbox
What we like
Usability
Easy access across multiple devices
Simple to share with others
Common Criticisms
Not an enterprise grade tool
Lacking security / directory integration
Puts corporations at risk
13
What we like (SharePoint)
Secure

Powerful collaboration tools
Why not take the best from both worlds?
What we like (Consumer Apps like Drop Box)

15
Consumer-like file sharing tools, with enterprise grade strength, utilizing
SharePoint as the collaboration backbone
Slalom Internal App Same App Customized for Pharma
This is doable
16
Three ways to mobilize SharePoint
Build something custom – which is the approach we typically take
Buy a mobile application that can access SharePoint (like SharePlus)
Use an enterprise mobile platform while maintaining interfaces to SharePoint
“ShareBox” is just the beginning
17
Content driven Enterprise applications can be created with SharePoint as the
backbone. Benefits:
Make your enterprise tablets and smartphones more than e-mail / PIM checkers
Use best in breed mobile development tools to create engaging interfaces
Permissions and access are built-in
The Approach is to
Create Mobile Apps that Use SharePoint Content…
Challenges
18
There are difficulties to single-use, consumer-like apps that
access enterprise data:
Most lines of business want “business as usual”
Tablets & smartphones are not PCs
Corporate capabilities can’t keep up with differentiation in operating systems, even
within the same operating system

Editor's Notes

  • #3: In just a few short years mobile devices,ie smartphones and tablets went from being “nice to have” to “can’t live without”Video conferencing Skype, FacetimeIM/ChatSocial MediaAnd Of course Business Applications Email, Calendar, ContactsOnce you get a taste for this type of productivity you can’t imagine why EVERYTHING can’t be done from YOUR mobile devcie
  • #6: The younger generation that will be coming into the workforce over the next 5+ years won’t know anything but mobile Touch, motion or maybe voice interface but the key for them will be access from anywhere they deem a “work” location and anytime they need to get work doneAND unlike many other technology advancements, mobile is not passing by the generation that is late in their careers or even has exited the workforceWhy……The mobile phenomenon is based on that that it is easy to use. INTUITIVEAnd this has certainly raised the bar on expectations for usability in the Enterprise
  • #7: And we are just getting startedIt is easy to forget that the first iPhone was released in 2007 which may not have been the first smartphone ever made but it definitely changedAND the original iPad was released just three short years ago.Now we talk about wearable computers, Google Glass or smart watches.Telematics targeting that untapped productivity opportunity known as your commute time
  • #8: Enterprise Mobility certainly gives us all a lot to think about And there are plenty of buzzwords and acronyms to go aroundLeft to their own devices your users WILL find a way Whether is be the device or applications they use or where they store the information they need to accessThe days of dictating how things will be until IT is ready to change are OVERIn the end we need to find a balance that yields the greatest productivity for our users while minimizing the amount of risk to the enterprise
  • #9: In my personal experience at Stanley we identified some very compelling Enterprise Mobility use cases
  • #10: If you are like me you follow a standard processConduct researchEvaluate options via a cross functional teamDecide which option gives your users the best productivity, with the least amount of risk, at the right cost, that you can supportBusiness Operations, Finance, IT and Legal, Finance are all part of this process
  • #11: Mobile phones will surpass the PC as the primary means of accessing the internet in 2013 - Gartner & Business Insider. In just 3 years since its introduction tablet shipments have surpassed both desktops and laptops - Mary Meeker, Kleiner Perkins in her annual internet trends updateThere are over 100MM people with access to SharePoint - Microsoft at their annual SharePoint conference
  • #13: Permissions / access built in – as in MDM, Power on passwords, plus integration and access to directory for app level security. Then pick up group level access permissions via SharePoint.
