Flashmeeting is a videoconferencing tool that allows remote participation in TeachMeets using a web browser with Flash, a webcam, and microphone. It allows those unable to attend in person to participate, provides a way to record sessions, and allows chatting without using the webcam. However, it requires a facilitator to coordinate in-person and remote attendees and recording quality depends on individuals' webcams. The document discusses considering Flashmeeting for future TeachMeets.

- #3: Flashmeeting is an online video-conferencing tool – used mainly in the educational arena. This has been used extensively in teachmeets as a means of including those who are unable to be there in person, and we are considering using it in future teachmeets
- #4: Flashmeeting uses technology that is widely available. There is a also a ‘chat’ area in flashmeeting, so that even without a microphone one can participate at a basic level.
- #5: With Flashmeeting one person talks and the others take a place in the queue There is a chat facility There is a ‘whiteboard’ facility,( so those using Flashmeeting can also present at the teachmeet)
- #6: The usual way this is set up for Teachmeets is to have the speaker at the Teachmeet the default on the video – with chat going on alongside
- #7: What are the advantages of using this as opposed to other software? The main advantage is allowing those unable to attend in person to participate - Ustream has also been used at TeachMeets, but this is a one-way broadcast. The ‘chat’ about the event is also kept together with the recording.
- #8: The disadvantages? It would really need a facilitator at the event to co-ordinate attendees and Flashmeeting attendees, and of course the recording is only ever as good as the equipment used
- #9: Is it worth considering for the future? Personally I think it has potential, but I would really like to attend an event where it is used, or talk to someone who has first-hand experience of it before making a final decision.
