- #6: The first one presented here was submitted by a PGA Professional at a par 59 course in New England. He found that students often failed to move from the lesson tee to actual play on a golf course. These students typically said there was “no place to play” where they could feel comfortable as beginners. Therefore, he launched a special “ Stress Free” Beginner League . Some common components included: Playing with a PGA Professional in scramble formats for initial rounds of play Pre-tournament group meetings were held to go over basic procedures, such as checking in and paying greens fees, as well as fundamental rules and course etiquette Free clinics were also held prior to play This facility continues to conduct the leagues twice a week and has generated over 10,000 rounds and $100,000 in revenue since its inception 6 years ago. The 2 nd best practice comes from a Municipal course in the Southwest As Weekday mornings were commonly slow periods for the facility, they identified an opportunity to target seniors to help fill the gap in play. As an extension to scheduling and promoting their leagues to the community, The PGA Professional went to local senior centers to offer clinics, tips, and just to talk to the people. Part of this message was to transition seniors from the centers, to the range, and onto the course These leagues started with 12 regular participants, and thanks to the extra effort have grown to over 100 seniors each Monday There are more details about both these programs, and numerous other examples within the Best Practices tool.
