The Experience API (xAPI), also known as Tin Can API, is a new e-learning standard that improves upon SCORM by allowing for statement, history, device, and workflow freedom. It tracks learning experiences across multiple systems through core API statements that follow an actor-verb-object format. Several countries and organizations are developing applications and tools to support xAPI. While opportunities exist, challenges include ensuring security, agreeing on activity definitions, managing data growth, and developing complex reporting. They have on their site presentations, white papers, study results as well as the current and previous standards documents for xAPI.Rustici Software was contracted by ADL to assist with developing the standards. Their web site contains introductory and more in-depth information on the standards. As well as having prototypes, case studies and a rather large forum for sharing information and asking questions about the standard.
