Learning in PYP and MYP
Traditional approach to teaching Learning in the IB Programmes
Learning is primarily about having information, and
schooling is about helping students meet the
information-accumulation requirements to move to
the next grade or educational level.
The curriculum is focused on concepts, and
strives to provide students with tools to help
them make sense of the natural, social and
cultural worlds around them.
Real-Life Contexts for Learning
We need to prepare our students for a future that we cannot predict. If they are going to be able to apply
what they learn in school beyond the classroom, they need to be flexible. To be able to transfer their
knowledge and understanding across disciplines and subject groups they need to learn how to organize and
use knowledge conceptually. They need to engage in higher order thinking, helping them to connect facts
and topics with more complex conceptual understanding. Sixteen key concepts form the basis of teaching in
the MYP. They form the backbone of the eight MYP subject groups.
Aesthetics Change Communication Communities
Connections Creativity Culture Development
Form Global interactions Identity Logic
Perspective Relationships Time, place and space Systems
In the MYP subjects are taught by subject specialists, but we aim to encourage interdisciplinary learning by
making the connections between disciplines explicit and by synchronising the sequence in which topics are
taught. In each year of MYP, there is an inter-disciplinary project, enabling teachers and students to work
together on a big idea, and helping to prepare students for the interdisciplinary e-assessment, which is a
mandatory requirement for MYP certification. The table below shows the approach to subjects across the IB
continuum:

`
Each year in MYP and DP, there will be 4 “Big Idea” days during which the normal timetable will be
suspended in order to give time us to work on projects.
