Power over Ethernet (POE) allows for delivery of electrical power to devices over Ethernet network cables. The three main components are the power sourcing equipment (PSE), powered device (PD), and cable. Typical PDs include IP cameras and wireless access points. PDs can advertise their power class which indicates how much power they require. POE has built-in safety measures like signature detection, current limiting, and automatic disconnection of devices. While POE can deliver power over about 300 feet, extenders can increase that distance. Advantages of POE include lower installation costs and easier maintenance through centralized power supply.
