Addvantage module – RSS why might it be an important technology ? By Marie Therese Bass
Introduction The aim of the presentation is to explain why RSS might be an important technology The original idea of RSS came from Netscape, where their intention was to provide a means for users to customize their personal homepage to contain links to websites that interest them, similar to bookmarking websites. RSS allows readers to sign-up and to receive news, headlines and short summaries from websites, weblogs, and online newsletters. In order to do so, RSS subscribers must download and install a so-called news reader or aggregator which is used to read the RSS feed from the source website. It scans and collects data from the latest RSS feeds from the worldwide web
Importance of RSS Technology Reliability - A reliable way to have your web content delivered to Internet users and potential clients - RSS ensures that your site is viewed by the people who are interested in them, without having them blocked and 'cleaned' by ISPs or Spam filters. Increase traffic for your website - Your website can 'harvest' and display information from other sites, driving more traffic to your own website. Thus optimizatising search engines for websites. Valuable, updated, and relevant resources for site visitors and potential clients - RSS is ideal for websites that contain (and syndicate) a lot of information that has to be changed or updated regularly. Flexibility - Allows users to have control over the information that they wish to view or receive, as they can remove a feed of their choosing any time they want to. Online marketing - RSS websites are also useful for people who conduct their business in the Internet, RSS can be an effective marketing tool for your website, especially in the following fields: ·E-mail marketing and publishing ·Search engine marketing and optimization ·Business blogging ·Internet advertising ·Branding and e-commerce
Reasons to publish an RSS feed Multiple gateways - It's another doorway or distribution channel for getting your content in front of readers Self-syndication - It allows publishers to syndicate content without the involvement of third parties. The predictability principle - By far the most important reason is this: Just as with newspaper subscriptions, RSS subscriptions mean your content is guaranteed to be seen on a regular basis rather than via sporadic pull behavior. On a typical news site, a reader stops by an average of three times per month. Loyalty - RSS can forge a closer relationship with readers if done in conjunction with a weblog or community feedback tools. Future revenue streams - RSS could be a great way of distributing classified advertising and other targeted marketing opportunities as long as the user requests it and finds it useful
How RSS looks like Imagine you want to write a program that reads RSS feeds, so that you can publish headlines on your site, build your own portal or homegrown news aggregator, or whatever. What does an RSS feed look like? That depends on which version of RSS you're talking about. Here's a sample RSS 0.91 feed (adapted from XML.com's RSS feed ):

XML.com

XML.com features a rich mix of information and services for the XML community.

Normalizing XML, Part 2

In this second and final look at applying relational normalization techniques to W3C XML Schema data modeling, Will Provost discusses when not to normalize, the scope of uniqueness and the fourth and fifth normal forms.

Advantages
Queries Querying tools are the most powerful and flexible features of the gifts and gadgets database that we have designed. They can be used to carry out many tasks, choosing tables, fields and records etc. In this database we have used three types of query: Select query Parameter query Update query
Select Queries Select queries are used to search and sort relevant data in your tables according to certain criteria. In this project we have used select queries to: To check stock levels which have reached or are below their re-order level A high spend query to show showing which customers have spent more than £200 this year A top five topics list showing a list of the top 5 based upon purchases.
Parameter Queries Parameter queries are used to enter different criteria each time that the query is run. In this project we have used Parameter queries to: Create a customer topic query that allows a specific customer to see the topic descriptions linked to that one customer Create a topic query when given a topic description, it lists the names of all customers who have ordered a product from that topic
Update Queries Update queries are used to . In this project we have used update queries to: Raise the price of all products by 10% We have chosen to create this type of query because at some time in the near future the company may want to raise product prices for a number of reasons, with inflation etc.
Navigation Menu The system has a navigation menu. The purpose of the navigation menu is that all of the other pages can be accessed from one screen. We have also incorporated a clock on this screen so that the user doesn’t have to keep referring to their watch or the clock situated on the computer.
Reports We have created a professional report to show you what the system is capable of doing. The benefits of this function are:
Macros Macros are used to navigate or run functions that allow us to navigate around the system etc. We have used macros on our switchboard to open and help the user to navigate. We have also used them to run our queries from the switchboard.
Input Forms Input forms can be used for a variety of reasons. We have used input forms on this system to help the user because they allow for easier and quicker data entry with less errors.
Database System Benefits Benefits of a database system include: Customer/Supplier Data- Keep track of your customer’s requirements and spending patterns and purchases from suppliers. Reports- Formatted reports to provide concise and up to date information. Data Independence- The data will be held in such a way that if you make any changes to the structure of the database, the programs that also access the data will not be affected.
Database System Benefits Data Consistency- Due to the fact that each data item is held only once, there is no danger of an item being updated on one system and not on the other. Data Security- The DBMS will ensure that only authorized users can gain access to the data. It prevents the loss of data files caused by software or procedural errors, or physically by hazards. Data Integrity- This is the protection of data from accidental, deliberate corruption or modification. In the database, the DBMS is responsible for this. It has the ability to specify constraints on data, such as for example, if a new product were added to my system, its code, description, price would have to be added too.
Website Websites can be useful tools for any company. We have decided to develop a website for Gifts and Gadgets Galore as we feel it will be a useful asset. Colour Scheme- We tried to make our site simple yet attractive. We decided to use bright, eye-catching colours to gain user attention. Layout- We have laid out our website in such a way that it is user friendly. We didn’t want everything to be too close together because users might not be able to see what they are looking for which may lead to them leaving the site.
Website Fonts- We have tried to avoid fonts that are too small so that users who have problems with their sight can still use the website. Navigation- We have tried to make the buttons visible and easy to understand so that users know what they are clicking on and where it will take them to. Pictures- We have included quite a few pictures on our site which we hope will keep users interested as lots of text can be boring. We have one larger main image which we hope will catch the users attention.
Website Some advantages of websites are: 24/7 Trading Wider Target Audience Lower Overheads Worldwide Communication
Conclusion Thank you for listening. Overall we hope that you have enjoyed and found our presentation useful. We have tried to cover all of the benefits and functions of our system but obviously there may be things that you are still unclear about or would like to ask. ………… ANY QUESTIONS PLEASE?
