Editor's Notes

  • #3: Listed are the 802.11 components that we are going to cover in this presentation. Explain what 802.11 is the standard for the implementation of the media access control and physical layer components of a WLAN. Maintained by IEEE LAN/MAN Standards Committee (802). It covers WLANs that use the use of 2.4 GHz, 3.6 GHz, 5 GHz and 60 GHz. Ask why do we have different standards?
  • #4: Difficult to buy devices that support this standard now. OFDM = Orthogonal Frequency-Division Multiplexing (at this level I do feel they need to know how this works but be my guest!). Distance is outside line of sight. Problem with 5 GHz is that signal is more readily absorbed by wall etc. so indoor distance is a lot less than using 2.4 GHz (802.11 g does 38 metres max indoors against 35 metres for 802.11a)
  • #5: Replaced by 802.11g because faster. DSSS = Direct-Sequence Spread Spectrum.
  • #6: Replaced 802.11b because faster although a lot of G based routers would also work at b standard. NB uses both modulation types – you might like to ask what the initials stand for! Worth introducing channels here – subdivision of the frequency band used - The 2.4 GHz band is divided into 14 channels spaced 5 MHz apart, beginning with channel 1 which is centred on 2.412 GHz. (not all can be used in certain countries).
  • #7: Note you can find ‘N’ based routers that will only work at 150 Mb/s – normally say on the box N150. (i.e. Belkin). 600 Mb/s is using both channels sometimes referred as dual channel. Initial ‘N’ based routers worked at 300 Mb/s which was a vast improvement over ‘G’ based routers. ‘N’ based routers will accept ‘G’ based devices at a lower speed/distance (backward compatible)
  • #8: Approved January 2014 although some companies had already started producing to that standard prior to acceptance. (Apple). Ever increasing need for speed! But back to ‘B’ standard for indoor distances.
  • #9: Directed question to test prior knowledge – what is a MAN. This could be an easier way to provide broadband access to some areas – get them to think where this could be used.
  • #10: You may wish to print this slide off so they can fill out the grid. The answers are on the next slide. You may wish to get them to swap the papers around so they can be marked or directed questions to get the answers or whatever works for you.
  • #11: Note speeds are in bits (signified by small b). Distances quoted are outdoors (basically line of sight) except 802ac which is indoors (worse than 802.11n & 802.11g for distance). 802n speed is dual channel.
