Teaching Each One An overview of teaching students with special needs James Butler
TASK To give an overview of resources and materials to help teachers reach students with special needs The focus is on inclusion and providing the student the least restrictive environment as possible
Hearing Assistive Technologies What are HATs? Hearing assistive technology systems (HATS) are devices that can help you function better in your day-to-day communication situations. HATS can be used with or without hearing aids or cochlear implants to make hearing easier—and thereby reduce stress and fatigue. Hearing aids + HATS = better listening and better communication!
How can HATs help me in the classroom HAT’s are useful because the enable a student to hear and communicate better then they could with just a hearing aid. HAT’s are particularly important in providing students a less restrictive enviroment By improving communication HAT’s allow a student to be included in all regular classroom activities.
Are there any “no-tech or low-tech” options out there? With the rising cost of technology, schools may be concerned about costs of providing assistive technology to students. Here are some options that do not rely on technology.
NO-TECH For students with mild disabilities note taking can be an issue of restriction. Just printing the notes for the student can lead to inclusion issues SOLUTION: Make an alternative note taking sheet where the teacher makes the outline and the student fills in.
Low-Tech A low-tech solution to student with mild disabilities is to send the student an email of the notes that they can use with what they learned in class. NOTICE: This option does require a student to have access to email at home.
