The document presents a clustering-based time slot assignment protocol (CTSA) aimed at enhancing performance in underwater acoustic networks (UANs) by addressing limitations in existing medium access control (MAC) protocols. CTSA organizes nodes into clusters and enables each cluster head to discover neighboring clusters, assign time slots for data transmission without the need for schedule exchanges, thereby reducing collisions and energy consumption. Simulation results indicate that the proposed protocol significantly outperforms the existing cod-ts protocol in terms of nodal throughput and energy efficiency.
