KA2 – INTERNATIONAL KNOWLEDGE FAIR 2017/2018 IES AL-ÁNDALUS (SPAIN)
PROJECT-BASED LEARNING (PBL): CREATING SCIENCE USING THE
SCIENTIFIC METHOD
GROUP MEMBERS: Group number:
I.- INTRODUCTION
Project Based Learning is a teaching method in which students gain knowledge and skills by
working for an extended period of time to investigate and respond to an authentic, engaging and
complex question, problem, or challenge.
II.- STEPS OF THE PROJECT
Do not forget to film or take photographs of the steps involving investigation and
elaborating material.
FIRST STEP: BUILD TEAMS
We will divide our class and we will build teams of 4 to 5 members.
SECOND STEP: DEFINITION OF THE FINAL PRODUCTS
In this case, our final products will be three elements: A laboratory report, a research
paper and a video of the steps followed using the scientific method.
THIRD STEP: THE DRIVING QUESTION
All the team members will think of some questions they would like to know. The teacher
will guide them to choose an achievable question among the ones proposed by the students.
FOURTH STEP: NEGOTIATE THE CRITERIA FOR EVALUATING THE
PROJECTS
Both teacher and teams will make together a rubric with the evaluation criteria.
FIFTH STEP: STUDENTS ACCUMULATE THE MATERIALS NECESARY FOR
THE EXPERIMENT AND THEY PROPOSE A LABORATORY REPORT
In this step, the teacher will check the laboratory and give the teams the go-ahead in order to
they can begin their experiments. Guidelines will be provided to the teams by the teacher so
they can elaborate their own laboratory report.
SIXTH STEP: STUDENTS CONDUCT THEIR EXPERIMENTS AND ELABORATE
THE LABORATORY REPORT
The results of the experiment will be given to the teacher and he will decide if the
experiment were carried properly or if it should be remade to obtain better or more accurate
results.

SEVENTH STEP: STUDENTS ELABORATE THE RESEARCH PAPER
Guidelines will be provided to the teams by the teacher so they can elaborate their own
research paper. This paper must include the main parts of all scientific reports: First page,
abstract, introduction, materials and methods, results and discussion, conclusions and
references. The teacher will decide if the paper is correct or if the team must remake it.
EIGTH STEP: STUDENTS ELABORATE THE FINAL VIDEO OF THE WHOLE
PROCESS
Teams will make a video with all the steps, including the experimental part and the writing
process of both the laboratory report and the research paper. All videos will be watched by
all the teams. These videos must show the driving question, the laboratory report, the
experiment conducted by the team, the elaboration of the research paper, the explanation
of the research paper (including their conclusions and the answer to the driving question).
NINTH STEP: STUDENTS AND TEACHER WATCH THE VIDEOS AND
EVALUATE THEM USING THE RUBRIC
The teacher will keep in mind the opinion if the rest os the teams and he will grade the team.
III.- FINAL CONSIDERATIONS
This project will count as an extra exam mark for the first or the second term depending on the
ending date of the projects.
The best videos will be shown in the International Knowledge Fair in Codogno, Italy.
