UIIT item 1
Project-Based Learning (PBL) Proposal

Subject: English Language

Grade: Form one

Theme: Festivals to celebrate

Learning outcomes:

At the end of the PBL activities, students will be able to develop:

    Study skills (self-directed learning)
 Communication skills (students discuss the design of a questionnaire, interview their
schoolmates, discuss and present the findings.)
 Information technology skills (making use of online resources, search engines, social
     network)
 Critical thinking skills (students evaluate and decide on the best report and the best chart)

Stage one: Preparation

Learning outcome:

Develop students’ study skills by asking students to surf the internet for more information about
festivals from around the world.

1.Start by asking students“what Festivals do they like the most and why?”

Q&A to involve students and schema building. To activate students’ prior knowledge of
the topic and any language expressions that related to festivals as they might already
         know through students’ elicitation

2. Instruct students to surf the internet to gather information on festivals from around the world.

Showing a video clip on YouTube in class and asking students to note down the
Christmas activities that shown in the video
         http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Omxl47NzpaE

To arouse students’ interest in the topic and prepare students for the context of the
         traditional festivals
3. Introducing the project-work: A survey on traditional festivals to students and the possible
ICT tools can be used.

4. Students are asked to work in group of four. Each group will decide a sub-topic (e.g.
Christmas) based on the main theme and submits the sub-topic to teacher before the next lesson

Stage Two: Implementation

Task: A survey on traditional festivals

Learning outcome:

Develop students’communication skills (students discuss the design of a questionnaire, interview
their schoolmates, discuss and present the findings) and information technology skills (making
use of online resources, search engines, social network to gather and present the information)



1. Teacher will introduce Delicious to students so as to assist them to find and bookmark
sites and information of their selected sub-topic (e.g. Christmas)
2. Each group will use RSS features in iGoogle for collecting data from different website,
together with the help of Delicious to gather information about traditional festivals and
how people celebrate the selected festival.

3. Then, students work in groups of four to design a questionnaire on the selected festival
based on the information they have collected from the internet, and with reference to a set
of guidelines and a feedback sheet provided.

4. Students are asked to upload the questionnaire on the English Society website. The best
questionnaire is used for the school survey

5. Students work in groups to interview their schoolmates with the help of the questionnaire
by video-recording. The clips will be edited by Windows Movie Maker for later use as
       part of the presentation.

6. After they have finished all the interviews, all the groups take turn to present their
findings to the other groups in class by using power-point and YouTube.

7. Students in their groups work together to present the overall data. (i.e. Oral presentation).
Next, each group then produces a chart and writes a report (200 words) of the survey.

8. Teacher will explain the assessment criteria to students and instruct students to download
the assessment rubric from teacher’s blog.
Assessment items Assessor(s)
       PBL report Teacher (50%)
Oral presentation Teacher (15 %), Other groups (15%)
       Group assessment Group members (10%)
       Self-assessment Yourself (10%)

Stage Three: Data analysis and conclusion

Learning outcome:

Develop students’critical thinking skills (students evaluate and decide on the best report and the
best chart)
1. Each group will analyze and further process the data collected.
2. Each group will edit the video clips (the interview with their schoolmates) by Windows
Movie Maker and upload them in YouTube.
3. Each group will present the overall data. (i.e. Oral presentation). Then, each group will
produce a chart (the statistics about what activities that the schoolmates usually do to
celebrate the selected festival) by using statistics software such as Exceland writes a
report (200 words) of the survey and 50 words of self-reflection.
4. Students need to fill out the peer evaluation forms during oral presentations and self-
assessment forms after completing the group report. (The peer evaluation form can be
       downloaded from teacher’s blog.)
5. The best report and the best chart are selected by the groups and posted up on the school
web-site for the reference of all students and teachers.
