Groups
DEFINITION:
– A work group is collection of two or more
individuals, working for a common goal and are
interdependent.

Types of Groups
Formal Group
Formal group is designated work group defined by the organizational structure. It is
collection of employees who work together to contribute towards achievement of
organizational objective. Formal groups are formed based on the work and human
resources required by skill, knowledge and experience to achieve organizational task.
• Command Group: It is formed to carry out a specific task. There is a leader in a
group who is also designated by the organization
• Committee: The other form of formal group is committee. It can be of permanent
or temporary nature. Planning committee, finance committees are of permanent
nature, they keep working all along and have a designated authority to control the
work.

Types of Groups
Informal Groups
Informal groups are groups that are not formally organized in the work system
to get the job done but develop on their own randomly at workplaces
because of common interest and mutual liking of the group members.
Features of Informal groups
a) Informal groups are formed by various members themselves, it has no official sanctity.
b) These groups are formed based on commonality of culture, religious function, liking for
each other and common interests.
c) Their contribution for success of formal group is immense if properly handled by
official authority.
d) These groups evolve their own structure, elect their own leaders and have followers.
e) They represent the human side of an organization.
f) The group exist without any rigid rules. Their common interest is bond for existence.

Psychological Groups
Behavior that is related to behavior of group members in informal group and
involving themselves in various activities, interactions and sentiments based
on common interests, value system and social bondage they develop.

• BUILDING EFFECTIVE TEAMS:
– Build trust and respect. Nurture a team-oriented
environment based on trust and respect, without which
there will only be limited success.
– Be true to your word.
– Organize a meeting for all employees.
– Take advantage of conflict.
– Make hiring a team effort.

Teams - Conflict
CONFLICT - MEANING:
– Conflict can be defined as the “process that begins when one party
perceives that another party has negatively affected something that
the first party cares about.

– Step 1 - Latent Conflict
– Step 2 - Perceived Conflict
– Step 3 - Felt Conflict
– Step 4 - Manifest Conflict

CONFLICT RESOLUTION
Conflict between parties can be resolved by five
different modes.
– Avoidance
– Competing
– Collaborating
– Accommodating
– Compromising

BASIS OF POWER
–“Power is the ability to get things done.”
–Power is also used to control various
activities of individuals and groups.
–Politics is a process whereby power is
acquired and used to influence behavior of
others. It is endemic to every organization.

Sources of Power
a) Rewards: This power source derives from the person’s control over
resources.
b) Coercive: The power to punish or reward the power to threaten and to
use one’s position to force others to take action. It reflects the extent to
which a manager.
c) Legitimate: The power which is exercised in accordance with
organizational rules.
d) Referent: This depends on charisma or personal attraction of the
individual.
e) Expert: Power which derives from knowledge.
f) Information: Information about people, events or other facts assist
prediction about future behavior or events.

EFFECTIVENESS OF POWER TACTICS
• Assertiveness: ordering, nagging, setting deadlines, and
verbal confrontation
• Integration: using flattery and acting friendly, polite, or
humble
• Rationality: using logic, reason, planning, and compromise
• Exchange: doing favors or offering to trade favors
• Upward appeal: making formal or informal appeals to
organizational superiors for intervention
• Coalition formation: seeking united support from other
organizational members.

ETHICS OF BEHAVING POLITICALLY
1) to demonstrate a concern for ethics,
2) to transmit ethical values and standards to those working in the organization,
and
3) to affect employee behavior by establishing behavioral expectations.
• Ethical behavior
– The employees shall maintain a professional attitude and shall act with
integrity in regard to colleagues in the profession.
– The employees shall respect the reputation of colleagues and shall refrain
from making false or malicious statements about colleagues.
– The employees shall respect the integrity of other employees’ studios and
shall not actively recruit students from another studio.
