• “A word or combination
of words entered into
the search input field
(or search box) to find
information on a
particular subject or
topic. Also known as a
query term.”
Queensland Government. (2011, April 19). Search term. In CUE Standard Definitions. Retrieved from

• Is Pluto a planet?
• How much does
an African
elephant weigh?
• Pluto and planet
• (weight or
weigh) and
“African
elephant”
• Speak like a caveman
• Think it, don’t search it words:
• Effect / Affect
• Impact
• Change
• Influence
• Advance / Improve
• Help / Aid
• Cause
• Pro / Con
• Benefit
What is a
scholarly article?
• Limiters (aka filters) are extra controls
you can place on your search parameters
to zero in on the specific information you
are looking for.
• Be careful!
• Example: If a student enters Game of Thrones
into a search bar, the system will look for the
words game, of and thrones anywhere in any
article, regardless of whether it is next to the
other words. If the student enters “Game of
Thrones” the database will only retrieve instances
of the phrase appearing as a whole.

• When quotations are placed around a group of
words, the system will only search for instances
where those words appear in the same word order.
• Make sure everything is spelled correctly
• Start out broad and add terms or limiters one
at a time
• Do not use punctuation
• Do not use abbreviations

•At least fifty pages (either printed or electronic pages)
•May be either a single volume or part of a multivolume
work (ex: an encyclopedia)

• Not allowed to
take out of the
library
• Often contain
smaller bits of
information
(such as
dictionaries or
thesauri)
• Allowed to borrow
from the library
• Usually more in-
depth sources
• The majority of
the books in a
library are usually
available to
borrow
• Provides timely information
to scholars or professionals
in a variety of fields
• Usually printed by academic
institutions or professional
organizations
• Many are peer-reviewed
• Usually a very trustworthy
source

“A peer-review process means
that other scholars/experts in the
field have reviewed the article's
content prior to publication and
deemed it of a scholarly nature.”
