Renzo Piano Building Workshop & FXFowle Architects The New York Times Building 620 8th Ave New York, New York The New York Times Buidling was completed in 2007 for the New York Times Company (NYTC), one the world's preeminent publishers and news organizations. The NYTC occupies 26 of the 52 stories in the 1046' (to top of mast) tall tower with each level having approximately 32000 sf of leaseable area. The project was designed by Renzo Piano Building Workshop with FXFowle Architects. The design's goal is one of lightness and transparency. The glass facades are covered with 186,000 ceramic rods which shield the interiors from direct sunlight while also attempting to reflect colors across the facade. The sun shade allowed the glass used to be highly transparent without heavy tinting. The skin is paired with advanced light monitoring systems that are tied into the artificial lighting, ensuring appropriate light levels throughout the day in the office spaces and a level of controllability for the occupants to ensure higher worker comfort and productivity. One of the key architectural elements is exposed steel columns, beams, and X braces running on the outside of the skin over areas without the ceramic sun Final Submittal shade. For fire safety reasons these do not contribute to the overall structural integrety of the building. Their function is more for occupant comfort to ensure their is not excessive sway in the building during high winds.
