Texture refers to the surface quality or 'feel' of an object, whether actual or implied. There are two types of texture: actual texture which is felt through touch, and visual or implied texture which is suggested through an artist's rendering. Trompe l'oeil is a technique that creates the illusion of realistic texture through visual means by 'fooling the eye'. Photography is good at translating real textures into implied textures visually, as are painters and draftsmen when they recreate the visual appearance of textures convincingly.
