The Mayors Caucus was formed in 1997 by Mayor Richard Daley of Chicago to represent mayors of 273 municipalities in the Chicago metropolitan region totaling nearly 10 million people. It is a partnership between the Mayor of Chicago and mayors participating in nine suburban municipal councils of governments. The Caucus addresses regional issues like electricity capacity, infrastructure protection, transportation funding, land use, housing, air quality, diversity, pensions, and service consolidation. Keys to its success are leaving party politics at the door, understanding the region's interdependence, requiring consensus of city and suburban mayors, and commitments from mayors who drive the agenda, not staff.
