Space Exploration for Us
Living in space is a very different experience
from living on earth

Daily tasks/routines cannot be performed the
same way (as on Earth) due to zero gravity

Astronauts prepare for the effects of zero gravity
on earth via training...
1) Underwater: Water simulates the effects of
zero gravity due to buoyancy acting against
gravity

Astronauts prepare for the effects of zero gravity
on earth via training...
2) Airplane: When an airplane in the sky
drops, passengers inside float up.

Space Exploration for Us
Zero gravity means that astronauts will be spinning
and rotating while floating, which may cause motion
sickness.
Astronauts train for this effect using a spinning chair.

High mineral density Low mineral density
Zero gravity also means that there is less pressure/
stress on the bones, which causes them to lose their
bone mineral density. This can lead to hip fractures
later in life, especially for astronauts who spend
months in space.
Space Exploration for Us
To solve this problem, astronauts have to eat
healthy and regularly exercise to keep their bones
from losing calcium.

Space Exploration for Us
As well, free-fall (acceleration and gravity)
produces G-forces (G = gravity) that can cause
humans to feel discomfort and even black out.
Astronauts (and pilots) train for these forces in a
centrifuge.
Centrifuge: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NWBMYV6S5gA
Space Exploration for Us
There is also limited space inside a space
shuttle, rocket, and/or space station, so
astronauts may feel claustrophobic, especially
since each journey takes a number of days.
Space Exploration for Us
Astronauts must also have good team work and
problem-solving skills. Many training programs
require astronauts to solve various problems in a
team with time limits.

Interested in space travel?
Space Exploration for Us
You can travel as an
astronaut/cosmonaut, or space tourist.
Space Exploration for Us
Space Exploration for Us
Virgin Galactic has already started taking
reservations in 2005. Here are the packages:
You can book online today @ http://www.virgingalactic.com/booking/

To prepare for your journey…
Space Exploration for Us
You can also pay $20-35 million (US) to ride the
Russian Soyuz rocket to the International Space
Station (ISS) via the Space Adventures Company.

Space Exploration for Us
Once on the ISS, you would be orbiting at a speed of
27 743.8 km/h, which means that it orbits around the
earth once every 92 minutes 50 seconds.
