- 5. Navigation is the science or skill of guiding the course of a ship or airplane. The navigation of a ship requires being able to read charts or maps.

- 10. Something that is stark is harsh and grim. The bare trees and overcast sky created a stark landscape.

- 12. Reading Letters from the Revolution (p. 262) Word Families Knowing about Word Families can increase your vocabulary. A prefix or suffix added to a base word can change its meaning. For example, unpatriotic and patriotism have patriot as a base word but each word means something different.
