SOLAS = International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea
(1974) – Chapter VII Carriage of Dangerous Goods
MARPOL = International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution
from Ships (1973/78) – Annex III Regulations for the
Prevention of Pollution by Harmful Substances Carried
by Sea in Packaged form.

Application
1. Unless expressly provided otherwise, this part
applies to the carriage of dangerous goods in
packaged form in all ships to which the present
regulations apply and in cargo ships of less than 500
gross tonnage.
2. The provisions of this part do not apply to ships’
stores and equipment.

• Valid for all shore-side personnel engaged in the transport of
dangerous goods (ship-based personnel - STCW)
• Adopted to the position and responsibility of the personnel
• The training is divided in three parts:
− General awareness
− Function-specific training
− Safety training (recommendatory)
• To be documented
• Periodically refresher training
