11 things you won't learn in business school
How many of you are feeling hungry right
now?
Judges pass heavier
sentences before lunch,
than after lunch…so
remember that biology
drives decision-making.
Beware
the
Milkshake
Ducks!
11 things they don’t
teach you in business
school
Believe me, I know, I went to business school
11 things you won't learn in business school
I speak with the voices of:
11
30 things they don’t teach
you in business school
In school, I was always an outsider.
• 50% north Indian
• 50% south Indian
• Parents had a “love” marriage
• I didn’t speak Malayalam
• Christian
• Skinniest guy in class
Thank God for that.
#1 Outsiders can see and act differently,
spotting opportunities others don’t.
“Here's to the crazy ones. The misfits. The
rebels. The troublemakers. The round
pegs in the square holes. The ones who
see things differently. They're not fond of
rules. And they have no respect for the
status quo. You can quote them, disagree
with them, glorify or vilify them. About the
only thing you can't do is ignore them.”
#2: What you study doesn’t really matter
much. You can Google everything or learn
it online anyways.
I chose to do Bachelor’s in Economics at St
Stephen’s, rather than become an engineer or a
doctor.
I have no regrets.
#3 Like me, you won’t remember much of what
you study in Business School. So why do it?

“Make friends. Make lots of friends. They will be
with you for a lifetime.
But also make sure who you hang out with:
The folks you will learn a lot from will not be as
much fun and the fun folks will not be as
learned.”
Rohit Fernandes
Senior Banker
#4 Be nice.
That chick you made out with in college? She
might just be your client one day. So you better
buy her breakfast. (true story)
Fazil Fuad
Entrepreneur and designer
After my MBA, and working in advertising for 18
months, I quit without a job and a plan.
I watched Star movies for a year, on TV.
Steve Jobs bummed around
for years, and took a
calligraphy course which he
didn’t finish.
But it changed his life.
#5: Life can take you down winding
roads, and that’s ok, if you join the
dots and keep learning along the way.
11 things you won't learn in business school
#6
Many will talk, and pretend to be with you, but run
away from the problems.
Running away from problems is not good exercise.
11 things you won't learn in business school
#7
“Well my one point - education
may stop here with MBA....but
learning never stops, it's there
throughout your lifetime...”
Hemant Soreng, Entrepreneur,
Digital evangelist, mountain climber
#8: Start something,
anything. You’ll learn the
most, then, and feel the
most alive.

#9 VCs and investors usually don’t get it.
Stay focused, nevertheless.
Human
emotions can
derail the most
analytical plan.
#10
“You can’t always get what
you want, but if you try
sometimes, you just might
find, you get what you
need”
I sold my
company to
fellow
Stephanians

not with you, in an organization.

#13: My biggest realization in Malaysia
The emotional quotient is more important
than the rational.
If you remember nothing else, remember this slide)
"People made decisions based upon emotion, and
justify them with logic. " -Jeff Woodard
"When dealing with people, remember you are not
dealing with creatures of logic, but creatures of
emotion." – Dale Carnegie
#14 We are all salespeople. We can
choose our styles, but remember…
#15 People buy from…........people.

DISTRACTED VS
FOCUSED
ME TIME VS COMMITTED
My generation needs to learn from you:
but your generation needs to learn too.
Baljin, Regional sales head of a
digital services company
That was my story.
Now, when you
graduate in 2018…
#18
Within 10 years, and maybe 5 years, your profession will change
irrevocably. Prepare against obsolescence!
#19:
3 ways to die at work:
• Death by PowerPoint
• Death by meetings
• Death by conf calls
You need to survive these, to climb the corporate ladder.
As you climb, the above increase exponentially.
Rajesh Krishnan, HP Data Scientist, handling Europe
#20:
Learn the Basic stuff.
How do you conduct an interview?
How do you do a performance appraisal?
And for heaven's sake everyone must be
taught how to sell (themselves, products,
services, ideas.... anything).Ravi V,
CEO and Founder, On Trac
#21: Beware the Dunning-Kruger effect.
# 22
There will be pressure to compete, to
conform, to chase the same goals as
others.
Forge your own path and you will be much
happier.
# 23
Be humble when you succeed.
11 things you won't learn in business school
# 24
Be kind to people: it
is better to be kind
than to be right.
CEO and founder of a
company he started when
left IIMB, 20 years ago
#25
Respect your gut bacteria. They know.
#26
The future of marketing:
“Data, data, data! I can’t
make bricks without clay!”
Sherlock Holmes
The Adventure of the Copper Beeches
#27 Hire more women. Quickly.
#28
Respect and understand complexity.
Create true value with simple solutions.
#29
Be a giver. Don’t wait.
This goes for brands too: find your
purpose.
Scandy, batchmate
#30
There will be many people better at
business than you who didn’t go to
business school.
There are people who studied Greek
philosophers, and people who are
champions at DOTA.
Respect that. And keep learning
widely. That will save you from
irrelevance.
