This document provides information about diagnosing issues with Passive Anti-Theft System (PATS) on various Ford, Lincoln, and Mercury vehicles from 1996-2002. It includes a chart detailing the different PATS system types used in vehicles, diagnostic procedures for each type, and a key to order replacement keys from Rotunda. The diagnostic procedures indicate how to check for faults using the appropriate PATS module and what to look for from the theft indicator light during testing.

THE POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM) IS A DIRECTION TO RETRIEVE FAULT CODES NOTE FROM PATS. RETRIEVE FAULT CODES FROM IF THE VEHICLE DOES NOT START AND THERE THE APPROPRIATE PATS FUNCTION IS NORMAL PROVE-OUT OF THE THEFT (PATS/HEC/VIC/ICM/SCIL) AND FOLLOW THOSE INDICATOR AND DTC P1260 IS NOT STORED IN PINPOINT PROCEDURES BEFORE ANY THE PCM, THEN THE VEHICLE HAS A FURTHER PCM DIAGNOSIS. NON-PATS RELATED ISSUE PREVENTING THE VEHICLE FROM STARTING. NOTE VEHICLES WITH PATS TYPE A, B, OR C SEND NOTE AN ENABLE MESSAGE TO THE PCM IF THE IF THE VEHICLE (SYSTEM TYPES A, B, C, D PROPER CONDITIONS ARE MET. THE PCM MAY NOT BE INITIALIZATION FOR PATS TYPES B AND C. OPERATING PROPERLY. REFER TO CHART FOR DETAILS ON THE NOTEREQUIRED INITIALIZATION. IF THE ENGINE DOES NOT CRANK ON NOTE VEHICLES THAT HAVE PATS OPERATING THE SOME VEHICLES WITH PATS TYPE B OR C STARTER RELAY, VERIFY PATS MAY INCLUDE A STARTER INTERRUPT (SI). (PATS/ICM/SCIL) OUTPUT TO THE STARTER THESE VEHICLES DO NOT NECESSARILY HAVE RELAY. ALSO VERIFY THE PATS POWER AND TO EXHIBIT A NO CRANK SITUATION TO GROUND CIRCUITS. CONSTITUTE A PATS RELATED NO START. NOTE NOTE BE AWARE THAT THE NEW PATS SYSTEM CHECK FOR A REMOTE VEHICLE STARTER TYPES B, C, AND E (ON THE FOLLOWING AND REMOVE ANY SUCH EQUIPMENT FROM CHART) OFFER AN ANTI-SCAN FEATURE. IF THE VEHICLE BEFORE CONTINUING YOU ARE TRYING TO START A VEHICLE WITH DIAGNOSIS. AN UNPROGRAMMED PATS KEY, THE THEFT LIGHT EMITTING DIODE (LED) WILL FLASH NOTE RAPIDLY AND THE VEHICLE WILL NOT BE SOME AFTERMARKET AUDIO EQUIPMENT HAS ABLE TO START.
