Study of Relationship between Mathayom Suksa III studentsâ Background, Academic Achievement,
Personality, Occupational Values, and Choice of Occupation

The purpose of this research was to study relationship between Studentsâ background, academic
achievement, occupational values, personality, and choice of occupation of Mathayom Suksa III students.
Samples used in research were Mathayom Suksa III students in the 1996 academic year under the
Department of General Education ,Ministry of Education, totaling 770 persons; 350 male students and 420
female students from 8 schools, 2 classes each. The research instruments were Background questionnaire,
Personality surveys, Occupational Values questionnaire, and Choice of Occupation questionnaire.
Statistics used for data analysis were Percentages and Chi-squares.
Research Findings :
The Mathayom Suksa III students were taken as sample, totaling 770 students which are mostly
females amounting 420 students or 54.5%, 321 students had GPA of 2.60 or more, or 41.7%. Four hundred
and sixty-eight students had Family Income of 20,000-30,000 Baht, or 60.8%. Four hundred and forty-four
students had Neuclear Family, or 57.1%. Six hundred and two students had Neuclear Family, or 78.2%.
312 and 397 students had Father / Mother with Primary Education, or 40.6% and 51.2% respectively. 683
and 574 students had Father / Mother with outside works, or 88.7% and 74.5% respectively. Six hundred
and eighty-one students had Extrovert personality, or 88.5%.
Further findings were that the Occupation groups mostly chosen by Mathayom Suksa 3 students
were:Mathematics and Sciences Occupation group chosen by 137 students, or 17.8%. Customer servicesâ
Occupation group chosen by 122 students, or 15.8%. Fine Arts Occupation group chosen by 118 students,
or 15.3%. Management Occupation group chosen by 99 students, or 12.9%. And the least chosen was the
Machinery Management Occupation group chosen by 2 students, or 0.30%.
10. In addition, it was found that Sex, Academic Achievement, Education levels of Father/Mother,
Monthly family income, occupational values in aspects of environment, aesthetics, social service, and
intellectual stimulation aspects were correlated at statistical significance of .05 level. Except for the
variables of family characteristics, family status, father/mother working status, introvert-extrovert
personality, overall occupational values, occupational values in aspects of creativity, management or
achievement management, relationship with bosses, ways of life, job security, colleagues, dignity,
freedom, multi-tasks, and economic compensation, no correlation was found to studentsâ choice of
occupations
