The Byzantine Empire was a continuation of the Eastern Roman Empire that lasted 1000 years after the fall of the Western Roman Empire. Constantinople was ideally located as the Byzantine capital, situated on a site that was easy to defend at a strategic crossroads between Europe and Asia, which brought great wealth to the city through trade for 700 years. Constantinople had strong fortifications with miles of walls, towers, and gates surrounding the city, and a chain blocking its well-protected harbor.
