- 4. What is sustainable development? Definition: Meeting the needs of the present generation without jeopardising the needs of future generations. Doesn’t harm the environment or risk making anyone worse off. (Make a copy of this in your books and highlight it with a colour) H 7 September 2009 Economic Development
- 5. Liana Project – run by the Rainforest Action Network (RAN) is a NGO or charity set up to protect the rainforests and their inhabitants. Residents collect Liana vines and use them to create wooden furniture or rattan (wicker) style product such as mats, baskets, bowl etc. the RAN found a market for the products in Brazil and USA and give money , technical knowledge and equipment to set up the business which is then run by the local community for the benefit of the local community.
- 6. 7 September 2009 Economic Development Tools For Self Reliance (TFSR) support 700 African groups in the poorest countries by providing them with the tools they have requested. They use local knowledge to know what tools will be useful to the local communities and make sure the equipment gets to the people who really need it. They also set up training courses to help young people become blacksmiths, tailors, carpenters or builders In the UK volunteer groups collect and repair tools which can be sent to help others. Since 1979 over half a million tools have been refurbished and sent overseas. This recycling and re-using also helps prevent waste here.

- 9. The Scenario: Korr, Northern Kenya
- 10. Korr has long had a number of boreholes that have been used by its nomads (people who travel around) for their herds Water was only taken seasonally so water levels did not drop. Pasture was not overgrazed
- 11. A Roman Catholic Mission has been set up in Korr. To support people a deeper borehole has been dug to provide year round water Because of the increased availability of water some nomads have given up their way of life and live in one place instead of travelling These people still ear their living through livestock They also take more resources from the environment than previously, simply because they were there all year round.
- 12. Role Play In groups of 4, divide yourself into pairs, label yourselves A and B. A You are the local settled population who appreciate the new services provided and do not want to move away to another village where there is no water or resources B You are the local leaders, who see how Korr has been damaged. The environment has been destroyed and you want to practise sustainable development in the area. Write two lists of points representing the views of both sets of people on the developments in Korr. As a group decide who has the stronger argument.
