Agenda – Day One
09:00 – 09:45 Registration
09:45 – 10:30 Translating Business Strategy and Objectives into an Architectural Perspective – Mike Thompson, BPM
Practice Director, Butler Group: This opening session will examine the relationships between business
objectives, IT strategy and Enterprise Architecture, and discuss the engagement that is required to translate
a business vision into an architectural perspective. It will introduce Butler Group’s view of the organisational
structures and processes that are required to undertake this engagement, and show some examples of
organisations that have gained significant benefits from this approach.
10:30 – 11:15 Making the Business and Benefits Case for an Enterprise Architecture Programme – Tim O'Neill, Research
Fellow, Faculty of Engineering and IT, University of Technology, Sydney Australia: This session will look at how
organisations should approach making a business case for Enterprise Architecture, and quantify the potential
and actual benefits. Some organisations have embarked on Enterprise Architecture initiatives purely on the
basis that it is part of the strategic planning process and will augment the future value of other projects, only to
find questions raised on an expenditure that is difficult to link to visible returns. It is therefore important to
structure Enterprise Architecture initiatives in a way that produces measurable outcomes.
11:15 – 11:35 Coffee
11:35 – 12:20 Building and Using an Actionable Enterprise Architecture – Mark Blowers, Enterprise Architectures
Practice Director, Butler Group: It is vital that an Enterprise Architecture does not become an isolated, static
plan that exists solely to be self-fulfilling. Instead, to be successful it must readily be translated into
actionable strategies and capabilities. In this session we will discuss how to approach architecture in a way
that makes it inherently actionable, and how organisations should use this architecture to derive other key
elements such as service delivery, security strategy, risk management, and infrastructure.
12:20 – 13:20 Lunch
13:20 – 14:05 Enterprise Architecture Modelling and Analysis with ArchiMate – Dr. Harmen van den Berg, BiZZdesign:
ArchiMate is an open and independent graphical language for modelling and analysing Enterprise
Architecture, supported by different tool vendors and consulting firms. ArchiMate is maintained within The
ArchiMate Forum of The Open Group. This session explains the language ArchiMate and its use for
modelling and analysing Enterprise Architecture, as well as learning more about the ArchiMate framework
and the concepts and relations for modelling and visualising the business, application, and infrastructure
              architectures.
14:05 – 14:50 How to build an Enterprise Architecture Practice? – Martin van den Berg, Architecture Service Line
Manager, Sogeti Nederland B.V.: More and more organisations are creating an Enterprise Architecture
Practice. Building such a practice requires more than just pulling a few smart people together and calling
them Enterprise Architects. When created in the right way Enterprise Architecture must have impact on
decision making and projects. In this session you will learn what an effective Enterprise Architecture
practices constitutes and what you can do to build and further improve such a practice.
14:50 – 15:10 Tea
15:10 – 15:55 The Role of Enterprise Architecture in SOA Initiatives – Mike Thompson, BPM Practice Director, Butler
Group: With Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) gaining increased traction, commonly asked questions are
              1) What is the relationship between Enterprise Architecture and SOA? and 2) what role should Enterprise
Architecture play in SOA projects? This session will show how Enterprise Architecture can provide a
powerful framework for SOA, and can support the consistent design and development of services.
15:55 – 16:40 A Reference Architecture (RA) an essential tool for Enterprise Architects (EA): Enabling a Service
Oriented Architecture (SOA) at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (AAS) via a RA for SOA – Marc Chang Sing
Pang, Enterprise IT Architect, Amsterdam Airport Schiphol: To offer functionality as a Service is one of the
eleven architecture principles EA use to guide IT developments at AAS. At the start of a project, EA describe
the architecture and constraints etc. To make life easier and avoid duplication of work, the EA recently
combined their knowledge on SOA and produced a RA on SOA that makes it easier to create a Project Start
Architecture and reduces costs and risks of projects aimed at developing and implementing services.

  • 3. Agenda – Day One 09:00 – 09:45 Registration 09:45 – 10:30 Translating Business Strategy and Objectives into an Architectural Perspective – Mike Thompson, BPM Practice Director, Butler Group: This opening session will examine the relationships between business objectives, IT strategy and Enterprise Architecture, and discuss the engagement that is required to translate a business vision into an architectural perspective. It will introduce Butler Group’s view of the organisational structures and processes that are required to undertake this engagement, and show some examples of organisations that have gained significant benefits from this approach. 10:30 – 11:15 Making the Business and Benefits Case for an Enterprise Architecture Programme – Tim O'Neill, Research Fellow, Faculty of Engineering and IT, University of Technology, Sydney Australia: This session will look at how organisations should approach making a business case for Enterprise Architecture, and quantify the potential and actual benefits. Some organisations have embarked on Enterprise Architecture initiatives purely on the basis that it is part of the strategic planning process and will augment the future value of other projects, only to find questions raised on an expenditure that is difficult to link to visible returns. It is therefore important to structure Enterprise Architecture initiatives in a way that produces measurable outcomes. 11:15 – 11:35 Coffee 11:35 – 12:20 Building and Using an Actionable Enterprise Architecture – Mark Blowers, Enterprise Architectures Practice Director, Butler Group: It is vital that an Enterprise Architecture does not become an isolated, static plan that exists solely to be self-fulfilling. Instead, to be successful it must readily be translated into actionable strategies and capabilities. In this session we will discuss how to approach architecture in a way that makes it inherently actionable, and how organisations should use this architecture to derive other key elements such as service delivery, security strategy, risk management, and infrastructure. 12:20 – 13:20 Lunch 13:20 – 14:05 Enterprise Architecture Modelling and Analysis with ArchiMate – Dr. Harmen van den Berg, BiZZdesign: ArchiMate is an open and independent graphical language for modelling and analysing Enterprise Architecture, supported by different tool vendors and consulting firms. ArchiMate is maintained within The ArchiMate Forum of The Open Group. This session explains the language ArchiMate and its use for modelling and analysing Enterprise Architecture, as well as learning more about the ArchiMate framework and the concepts and relations for modelling and visualising the business, application, and infrastructure architectures. 14:05 – 14:50 How to build an Enterprise Architecture Practice? – Martin van den Berg, Architecture Service Line Manager, Sogeti Nederland B.V.: More and more organisations are creating an Enterprise Architecture Practice. Building such a practice requires more than just pulling a few smart people together and calling them Enterprise Architects. When created in the right way Enterprise Architecture must have impact on decision making and projects. In this session you will learn what an effective Enterprise Architecture practices constitutes and what you can do to build and further improve such a practice. 14:50 – 15:10 Tea 15:10 – 15:55 The Role of Enterprise Architecture in SOA Initiatives – Mike Thompson, BPM Practice Director, Butler Group: With Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) gaining increased traction, commonly asked questions are 1) What is the relationship between Enterprise Architecture and SOA? and 2) what role should Enterprise Architecture play in SOA projects? This session will show how Enterprise Architecture can provide a powerful framework for SOA, and can support the consistent design and development of services. 15:55 – 16:40 A Reference Architecture (RA) an essential tool for Enterprise Architects (EA): Enabling a Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (AAS) via a RA for SOA – Marc Chang Sing Pang, Enterprise IT Architect, Amsterdam Airport Schiphol: To offer functionality as a Service is one of the eleven architecture principles EA use to guide IT developments at AAS. At the start of a project, EA describe the architecture and constraints etc. To make life easier and avoid duplication of work, the EA recently combined their knowledge on SOA and produced a RA on SOA that makes it easier to create a Project Start Architecture and reduces costs and risks of projects aimed at developing and implementing services.
