Welcome to the Girl Scouts of Louisiana – Pines to the Gulf 2009-2010 Program and Event
Guide! We hope that as you look through our publication, you find events that sound new
and exciting to you and your girls. We have tried to enclose as much as possible but as
always, dates, times, and actual events are subject to change. Please watch our website,
www.girlscoutspinestogulf.org, for updates and more information on the events. Also,
watch for the In the Know for specific information and attend service unit meetings to get
current information.

Stay tuned!!! Some events are listed but details have not been worked out so look for that
information. We will distribute it as soon as we can. We wanted to get the dates on the
calendar so you can plan accordingly! On top of those council sponsored events, the
Program Department wants to encourage your troop and service units to plan events for
your areas. We will offer Event Planner Workshops for those who need training in planning
events. The Program Team is always willing to help out in whatever way we can to help
you put on those activities for the girls.

Also enclosed, are descriptions of a few check out or purchasable materials that Girl
Scouts of Louisiana – Pines to the Gulf offers. These activities can be used in troop
activities or for service unit events. Let’s use the resources we have available!

Please be aware when registering for council sponsored events…DEADLINES WILL BE
STRICTLY ENFORCED!!! In order for us to put on quality programs for an area as big as
ours, we will stick to the published deadlines. Please pay attention and be aware that
some events will be on a first come, first served basis. In an area with approximately
10,000 Girl Scouts, we will have minimum and maximum numbers for our events that will
be followed. It is recommended that you get in your money and registrations as soon as
possible to ensure your spot and the success of the event. Registration information will be
listed on all flyers, and it is not the same for every event. Be sure to read carefully and
send your money or registration in to the correct location. There will be a generic event
registration form that will be used for all events. It is located in this guide, as well as on our
website. Again, visit our website frequently to get updated information on all events.

The Program Department hopes that you find events that your girls are interested in
attending on our 2009-2010 Program Calendar. Hope to see you soon!

Participating in Girl Scouting can change the way girls see their world and their place in it.
Through programs that are girl-driven and by working in partnership with adults, girls learn
the importance of personal responsibility, the value of goal-setting, the spirit of teamwork
and the thrill of accomplishment.

Design Criteria

This is a point of reference. We want you to know that it exists, and that this is the
criteria that will be used along the way to direct and assess our efforts. It describes
exactly what we’d like to achieve with a membership strategy and will also be used to
understand and prioritize future updates to our design based on pilot learnings.

• Be mission-driven.

• Be data driven including quantitative & qualitative market research and
available outcome measurements.

• Align to the Girl Scout Leadership Experience.

• Allocate existing resources to be cost effective.

• Leverage funding opportunities to be sustainable and growth oriented.

• Attract adult volunteer role models from the diverse backgrounds to deliver
the GSLE in all grade levels.

• Support short and long term volunteers through the Single-Entry System
(SES).

• Provide all girls, all grades, and all backgrounds equal access for
participation.

• Recruit and place girls in all grade levels based on informed choices, flexible
offerings, interest and availability.

• Leverage technology to engage and re-engage members.

• Mobilize community partners and resources.

• Utilize Girl Scout competitive advantage (camp, events, troop, travel and
global network) and build upon new innovative ideas based on girl needs
and interests.

To make council sponsored events a wonderful experience for all, please adhere to
the following:

All event registrations will be accepted over the counter at any service center, by mail,
or by council staff with payment for event fees. The Program Event Registration Form to
be used is included in this book.

Deadlines are final. Once the registration deadline has passed, no registrations will be
processed. All registrations must be in the office by the deadline for the event.

No TAG-A-LONGS please! This includes extra children, girls who are not in the age
group specified for the event, or boys! Some are events for families; these will be
promoted as such on the individual flyers.

Many events have minimum and maximum numbers of girls in order to make the event
safe, cost effective, and fun. Some events fill up quickly, so get your registrations in
early. Where possible there will be waiting lists made. Make sure you let the event
contact person know if you will NOT be able to attend so that another girl may have the
opportunity to participate. If minimum numbers are not met, the event will be canceled
so please register early!

Individual and troop registration fees are NOT refundable unless there are
circumstances that prevent the event from being held. Girls MUST ATTEND the event
in order to receive a badge, patch, handouts, or other event supplies unless otherwise
noted.

When troops attend an event, the leader (or other designated adult) must bring the
health history and parent permission forms for all girls attending. First Aid cannot be
administered without written permission.

If an event is attended by an individual girl not in a troop, the health history and parental
permission located at the bottom of the event registration form must be filled out.

SMOKING is NOT PERMITTED at any event where girls are present.

All registration fees are applied to the cost of the event.

Girl Scout Juniors

Fit for a Princess teaches the importance of nutrition and physical activity. Fit
for a Princess was designed by a registered dietitian in response to girls'
health needs and is being made available to you by the Louisiana Beef
Council. To meet the needs and interests of girls across the Girl Scout Junior
age range, Fit for a Princess offers many alternative activities, most of which
can be applied toward program badges if not used to earn the Princess Zip
patch.

The primary activity is a readers theater presentation of the play, Fit for a
Princess, where the girls read the script while performing. Without requiring
elaborate props or stage settings, the play directly communicates the Girl
Scout commitment to "build a strong body." Fit for a Princess is available to
troops at no charge. If you are interested please contact your local Program
Specialist.

“The Juliette Gordon Low Girl Scout
National Center is located in downtown
Savannah. It was the Gordon family
home, and Juliette Magill Kinzie Gordon, called Daisy, was born here on October 31, 1860.
The town house, completed in 1821, is furnished as it was in 1886, the year of Daisy’s
marriage, and the year her parents renovated and enlarged the house. Girl Scouts of the
USA purchased the house in 1953. Since the dedication in 1956, it has been operated as a
Girl Scout program center and historic house museum. It is one of the most popular house
museums in the United States. In 1965, it was designated Savannah’s first national
Historic Landmark. It is open to Girl Scout troops, groups and the general public. Many
times during the year, Girl Scout troops have the good fortune to meet and share activities
with Girl Scouts from other parts of the country. Visitors always include a mix of Girl Scouts
in troops and their families, alumnae Girl Scouts and the touring public from all over the

Bridging the Gap connects girls to science, math, and engineering through explorations of
hands-on activities. Bridging the Gap has simple, easy to follow, inexpensive program
activities that help the girls earn “hard to do” science, math, and engineering badges. The
BTG tubs are filled with basic materials and the tools a troop needs to complete the badge
work for their grade level. A leader’s guide, a manual with tips on how to do the activities,
and safety goggles (if required) are available. A $10 deposit is required to check out the
tubs. Refunds will be mailed upon receipt of materials. Some of the tubs available for
check out at the service centers are:

These computerized baby dolls cry, eat, sleep, need changing, rocking and sometimes are just fussy!
Girl Scout Cadettes, Seniors and Ambassadors can check out these dolls to take home overnight or
for multiple nights. Training is available for anyone who wishes to check out the dolls. Dolls are
available at the Shreveport and Lafayette Service Centers. You must give at least one month notice
to check out the dolls in order to get trained. For more information, contact Micki Blakeley at

Through Girl Scouting, each girl is encouraged to become a stronger member of her own
religious denomination, and every Girl Scout group recognizes that religious instruction is
the responsibility of parents and religious leaders. Girl Scouting offers religious awards that
may be worn on the Girl Scout uniform.

Work on religious recognitions should be done outside the troop meeting. A special
meeting should be called if a large number of girls in the troop want to work on a particular
religious award program. Individual girls work with an advisor to complete this award.
Religious awards are earned by girls with the guidance of their leader and pastor, priest,
rabbi, or other spiritual leader. This provides a wonderful opportunity for personal and
spiritual growth.

Girl Scouts of Louisiana – Pines to the Gulf has grant money for scholarships for girls
earning the Catholic or Protestant awards. Call the Program Department for more

Girl Scouts, learn how to use a sewing machine and make pretty things. When you learn to
sew, you can make clothing and decorations, repair torn garments, or put a button on
clothing. Sewing machines can be checked out from all service centers.

Council’s Own Badges, and Try-Its
Girl Scouts of Louisiana – Pines to the Gulf has developed several council’s own badges
and Try-Its. They are official and may be worn on the front of the badge sash or vest.
Requirements may be requested from your local council service center and insignia may be
purchased in the council shop by troop leaders.

Girls will learn about the Acadian Culture by visiting with descendents and gathering information
from them. They will take time to learn new games, dances, music, and stories. They can
experience traditional food and learn the language common to the Acadian people.

The purpose is to gain insight into the multitude of traditions of the Acadian people of Louisiana and
inspire pride in our culture.

♦ Hurricane Preparedness
The purpose is to educate ourselves about hurricanes and learn how to prepare for them. This is
vital in minimizing potential loss of life and property damage. Living along the Gulf Coast possesses
this real threat.

♦ Native American Heritage
The purpose is to gain insight into the multitude of traditions and heritages of the Native Americans
of Louisiana and inspire pride in our multi-faceted Native American culture.

Council’s Own Patches
♦ I Love Louisiana
This can be earned by Girl Scout Brownies, Girl Scout Juniors, Girl Scout Cadettes, and Girl Scout
Seniors. The purpose is to educate oneself about Louisiana and its resources as well as the history.
Aspects also include current state involvement through legislative requirements.

♦ Wildflower Project
This project offers an opportunity to girls to explore the outdoors and to learn from the beauty of the
species of wildflowers we have. The girls are also able to help with the preservation of the
environment by applying what they have learned in a service project.

Service Unit Event Coordinator

RESPONSIBLE TO: Program Specialist/Membership Specialist
MAJOR CONTACT: Program Specialist/Membership Specialist/Service Unit Manager
PURPOSE: To provide high quality, age appropriate Girl Scout program based on the principals of
Girl Scouting in service unit areas to enhance the troop experience.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

Manage Service Unit events in accordance with council policies and standards.
Appoint a planning committee.
Call and attend all planning sessions of this event committee.
Relay all event information to the Service Unit and Membership Specialist.

See that the event/activity adheres to safety standards.
Work within council budget. Present a proposed budget at least 4 weeks prior to the event and final
financial report with proper receipts no later than 2 weeks after the event to the Program Specialist.
Submit final paperwork (attendance list, tally attendance breakdown, comments list taken from
evaluations, and a "to do" list for the event) no later than 2 weeks after the event to the Program

Specialist.
Adhere to council guidelines for dates involving publicity, notices and membership and check request.
(Checks are to be requested the 10th and 25th of each month).

GIRL SCOUTS OF LOUISIANA – PINES TO THE GULF
FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE APPLICATION

PURPOSE:
To provide assistance to girls in Girl Scouts of Louisiana – Pines to the Gulf; enabling them
to participate in day camp, resident camp, council sponsored trips, or program events that
they would not be able to attend due to financial circumstances.

SOURCE OF FUNDS:
A set budgeted amount of funds is made possible through proceeds from the Cookie Sale
Activity, United Way, Annual Giving and gifts and grants.

CRITERIA FOR RECEIVING ASSISTANCE:
• Need for financial assistance as documented on the application.
• Family' willingness to pay a reasonable portion of the fee. (Only in extreme cases

will total fee be granted.)
• Previous financial assistance received by the family. Priority is given to first time applicants.

APPLICATION PROCESS: - - - Each applicant must complete a separate form.
All blanks must be filled in. Complete application form(s) and mail or bring to any Girl Scout
Service Center. Place in envelope and mark “CONFIDENTIAL”, Financial Assistance Request.
