- 1. INDIANS’ WEEKLY! September 19, 2012 Volume XII “WHITE” MELTS “BOIL” HEIGHTS DOWN! On one of the hottest days in recent history, the Running Bears “White” team went into “Boil” Heights and melted down the Wolfpack team. With a stifling and smothering defense and a dynamic NATE GARCIA and powerful offense, the White showed their supremacy on both sides of the ball. With “Rio’s MILES AVILA Players of The Game” Nate Garcia, Miles Avila, Mike Barrios and Zack Garcia making one big play after another, the Running Bears wore down the Wolfpack and dominated the contest. Head Coach Frank Lopez is very proud of his team’s overall performance and had trouble choosing the Players of The Game as it was a complete team effort. Next up for our “White” team are the ELA Bobcats “White” on Sunday at 11:30 a.m. at Garfield High School. MIKE BARRIOS ZACK GARCIA “GREEN” GRINDS DOWN WHITTIER “GOLD”! The Running Bears “Green” team went to war with the Whittier Redskins “Gold” this past Sunday and dominated a formidable Whittier team in the end. The game was a great defensive contest with “Rio’s Player of The Game” Andrew Vargas providing plenty of excitement and taking an intercep- tion back 20 yards to help turn the game in the Indians’ favor. The other “Rio’s Player of The CASTRO Game” was Ryan Castro who turned in some electrifying runs and provided the fire power for the offense. Athletic Director Maria Tellez’ statement of “we have a very good team” is a bit of an un- derstatement and she is very proud and excited about the rest of the upcoming season. Next up for the Green team will be the Pico Rivera Dons “Blue” on Sunday at Grant Rea Park at 11:30 a.m. VARGAS “BLACK” BREAKS DOWN “WHITE” IN WHITTIER! The Running Bears “Black” team broke down the Whittier Redskins “White” on Sunday with a relentless defense. According to Head Coach Bruno Torres, the offense “was a bit off it’s game,” but the team stepped up and shut the Whittier Redskins down. The Running Bears scored on five different occasions and the defense did not allow a single score by the Redskins. According to Coach Torres, “it was a total team effort” and he is proud of the way the team has come together. - 2. SCOUTS GET SMUTHERED, SUFFER 1ST LOSS 31-0! It began as one of the hottest days in history and it ended quickly for the Scouts in their first regular season game. Within the first couple of minutes the Scouts had turned the ball over twice and the Redskins had capitalized on both of those occasions. You had to feel for the young team as they were visibly nervous and then shaken by the sudden turn of events. Head Coach Julio Baez said; JIMENEZ “The Scouts suffered a tough loss on a day where everything seemed to go wrong from the start. Key turnovers and a few minor injuries set the tone for the game early and the recovery proved to be tough. In light of the loss, inspirational play came from “Rio’s Players of The Game” Lineman Richard Jimenez #55 and Cortez Guerra #66. Playing both offense and defense and rarely coming off the field, they never gave up and continued to work hard regardless of the outcome. They repre- sent everything Indians’ football has come to mean.” The road doesn’t get any easier for the Scouts as they will face the Pico Rivera Dons on Sunday at Grant Rea Park at 9:00 a.m. GUERRA BRAVES ARE THE AVENGERS, BAFFLE REDSKINS 45-0! The Braves went into Whittier with something to prove to themselves and then found a sense of vengeance for unsportsmanlike play by the Redskins Gremlin team and avenge they did! This was never a game as the Braves completely dominated the ’Skins in every aspect of the game. Led by two TD’s each by RB’s Alex Cortez and Steven Loera, along with Aaron Martinez, Nathan Ancheta and Brandon Ruiz each scoring their first TD’s as Indians. The defensive line played lights out and only allowed two first downs all game long. The “Rio’s Players of the Game” were Aaron Martinez and the entire “Green” line. Martinez was a tremendous force on special teams shedding blockers MARTINEZ and smacking anyone that got in his way. The green line opened up holes all day allowing the RB’s all the room they needed to get to the end zone. Next up are the Pico Rivera Dons at 11:00 this Sunday at Grant Rea Park. “Green” Line, pictured from left to right are: Adam Gomez, Arianna “Ice Box” Araiza, Adrian Acosta, Isaac Cruz & Aaron Gasca. “GREEN LINE” WARRIORS WIN WIPED OUT BY TURNOVERS & PENALTIES! The Warriors wiped themselves out of a victory by fumbling their chances away. Although it seemed the team was superior to the Redskins, the Warriors were plagued by fumbles all day long. Head Coach Jason Morago says; “Although we are a new staff, we knew going in that being the reigning League Champs would put a target on our backs and bring everyone’s best shot. The first play from scrimmage went as scripted, a 51 yard TD by #5 Angel Ramirez. Our plan was to get An- gel the ball early and often because of his break away threat on every play.” Ramirez would score a 2nd TD, but it was called back due to a holding penalty. With today’s technology, after reviewing SWEIDA the play over and over, there was no penalty that could be seen. The Warriors would fumble the ball on the very next play. “Whittier played well, but we beat ourselves with too many penalties and untimely turnovers, we look forward to this week’s Pico game” says Coach Morago. “Rio’s Offensive Player of the Game” is #5 Angel Ramirez with 10 carries for 115 yards and one TD and “Rio’s Defensive Player of the Game” #27 Russell Sweida with five tackles, including a TD saving tackle in the 2nd quarter, one pass deflection and one huge interception late in the game to end a Whittier threat and give the Indi- ans one last opportunity to win. “Russell has come a long way in the past 10 weeks” says Morago, “he just earned the “Jack” (FS) RAMIREZ position in the last week of the preseason. “Getting Russell on the field gives our defense a lot more speed. He has only begun to tap into his potential.” Pico comes into Grant Rea Park on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
- 3. REDSKINS PUNISHED IN “THE PIT” 24-8! “The Indians kicked off their season Sunday as they faced off against the Whittier Redskins in the renowned “Pit” at St. Paul High School. With war paint on their faces and a victorious demeanor in their heart, the Indians stepped onto the field ready for battle. The Redskins proved to be a formi- dable opponent in the first half as both teams stalemated in their opening drives. It was not until 10 seconds before the end of the half that the Indians were able to strike the first blow. The Indians scored from 1 yard out on a “wedge” run by Manuel Garcia III. The Indians found themselves on the 1 yard line thanks to a GREAT ONE HANDED CATCH by Rio’s “Co-Player of the Game” WR Ramon Preciado,” says Head Coach Steve Rivas. PRECIADO Whittier would come out in the second half to score on their first drive to even things up at 8-8, but solid team defense by the Indians and in particular, a big play from “Rio’s Co-Player of the Game” Kobe Quiroga would keep the Redskins at bay. Garcia also provided support with big plays on de- fense to keep the Redskins out of the end zone. Coach Rivas said, “Offensively, the air attack proved to be the difference. QB Adrian Lemus found himself having plenty of time to throw the ball with great play from the Offensive Line and was able to complete 6 of 8 passes. The receiving core also helped with great catches by Noah Rangel, Dmitri Mata and Greg Nevarez in key situa- tions. All in all, it was a complete team effort as the “Black” offense helped to make a difference with a diving catch by WR Anthony Keys on a pass from Airrick Nava. They also found the end zone on a power run by RB Gabriel Padilla on a two-point conversion.” The Indians were able to QUIROGA tack on 16 points in the second half and finish the Redskins hopes of an upset 24-8!
