The Recovery Resource Council seized several opportunities over the past year to improve and expand their services. They launched a $1.1 million capital campaign to pay off debt and renovate facilities. They received funding to continue their innovative veterans counseling program. And they became accredited by The Joint Commission, demonstrating high quality standards. These achievements will allow RRC to help more people in need and convert funding from debt to counseling programs.

- 2. Dear Friends of the Council 2014 has been a year of Opportunities Seized for Recovery Resource Council. Under the guidance of Eric Niedermayer, our CEO, Patti Broyles, our Director of Major Gifts, and the creative (more about that later) and caring staff, the Council kicked off its first ever Capital Campaign to pay-off the debt on the Airport Freeway facility, renovate an adjacent house for use as a counseling facility and expand parking for both facilities. This $1.1 million campaign, when completed, will convert over $120,000 per year from debt service to counseling and education program services. Please help us seize this opportunity and make a special commitment to support this critical campaign so that the Council and its clients have a permanent place to call home. Getting back to the creativity of the Council’s programs, the Council initiated a new program focused on veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder and a myriad of other symptoms that PTSD causes, including drug addiction and alcoholism. The program includes intensive therapy for veterans and their families, play therapy for children and community service navigation. Although the program had research evaluation and analysis documenting that it was extremely successful, the Council received notice that the funder was going to have to reduce its funding due to a funding shortfall. Eric and the other committed staff at the Council immediately began searching for new ways to both continue and expand this in demand counseling program for veterans, their spouses and children. On an extreme long shot, Judith Priest, Director of Clinical and Behavioral Health Programs, completed an application for funding to the Wounded Warrior Project, requesting funding for the entire project for an additional year. Hundreds of organizations applied for a total of 14 grants. You know the rest of the story. Opportunity Seized. Recovery Resource Council was awarded a grant to continue the program for an additional year. In awarding the grant, the Wounded Warrior Project commented that the chosen programs were the most innovative in the country. Additionally, the Lockheed AERO Club and The Rees-Jones Foundation also awarded funding. Over a year ago, Eric approached the Council Board of Directors and indicated that he had a long term goal to have the Recovery Resource Council accredited by The Joint Commission (an independent, nationally recognized organization that oversees the safety and quality of health care and other services; hospitals all seek accreditation from The Joint Commission). Eric believed this could work as a stepping stone for coordinated programming with hospitals as well as other organizations and become a strategy to upgrade the quality of the agency’s operations and treatment programs. The first order of business was finding donors to support the additional cost of staff preparation, application expenses and Joint Commission staff interview and procedure review expenses. Once the funds were raised, the work began in earnest. Requiring approximately a year of preparation including review and writing of policies and procedures for each of the Council departments and numerous staff training programs in order to comply with the rigorous standards of The Joint Commission, Eric and the staff prepared for their comprehensive organizational review, which took place in October. Typically, a first review for a new Joint Commission applicant generates dozens of required “corrective actions” and requires a follow-up on-site visit. I am proud to say that the first review of Recovery Resource Council generated a total of five minor corrective actions, and no additional site visit was required. On November 20, 2014, Recovery Resource Council became the newest organization to be accredited by The Joint Commission. Opportunity Seized. Please note the inclusion of the The Joint Commission Accreditation seal located next to this letter to help you share a bit in the accomplishments and opportunities seized by the Council this year. In fact, the Recovery Resource Council through its staff seizes opportunities large and small on a daily basis. Some of the opportunities are big and well known, such as The Joint Commission accreditation. But most of the opportunities seized are by the world’s standards small. They are found in the quiet of a counseling session with a family suffering from the effects of PTSD or the words of an at risk child in the Kids Connection, Sunshine Club program that are no longer always spoken with anger. We hear them in the joyful squeal of a child living in a homeless shelter catching her first fish at Camp L4 or the discussion with a formerly long term homeless person that now has his own apartment in part because of the continued counseling they receive through the Council. These are the opportunities we can seize together in response to the ravages spread by addiction of all types. My prayer for each of you this year is that you seize the opportunities presented to you on a daily basis. These opportunities will present themselves when you least expect it. Watch for them. But also, let me present you with an opportunity to seize right now. If you have never visited the Council, please give Eric a call and come out and see what we do. If you have not been engaged with the Council recently, re-engage. We always need assistance. As always, opportunities come with costs. In this case, all of the Opportunities Seized this year came with a very real financial cost. Please seize this opportunity as well. We are early in our Capital Campaign and need all donations, large and small. We still have naming rights available for the facilities. If you have been blessed with the capacity to make a lead gift for the Capital Campaign or otherwise, seize the opportunity. But remember that all gifts of all sizes are needed and appreciated. - 3. Over the last few years, the Clinical Department has grown to include a more comprehensive menu of behavioral health services as we recognize the link between addiction and mental health issues. Recovery Resource Council now provides comprehensive, quality mental health and substance abuse services designed to meet the unique needs of children, families and individuals in the community. Staffed by a multidisciplinary team of highly competent and caring professionals, our Clinical Department is committed to providing services that are responsive and easily accessible to those in need. Recovery Resource Council’s long history of meeting the needs of our community reflects this commitment. The Clinical Department of Recovery Resource Council recognizes that behavioral health is a complex, ongoing process with multiple paths to recovery from addiction and mental health issues. We embrace a continuum of care that includes prevention education, counseling, treatment and recovery support services that lead to an individual’s full engagement in his or her family and community. Services and programs are designed to identify and build upon the strengths and resilience of individuals, families and communities in order to achieve sustained health, wellness and recovery. Experienced clinicians provide comprehensive assessments and individualized treatment for children, adolescents and adults who are struggling with life’s stressors. Counseling services are comprised of individual, group, family and educational therapies that promote health and wellness and provide recovery support. Treatment plans have an educational and family focus, helping both clients and their loved ones understand addiction and mental health issues while learning strategies for more open and positive communication. The aim of all programs and services is to assist those seeking help to attain the highest degree of stability, sustain recovery and achieve long-term health and wellness. Services are age and gender appropriate, culturally competent and attend to mental health needs, trauma, family dynamics and other factors that impact recovery. Our objective is to empower individuals and families affected by addiction or mental health concerns to overcome obstacles, increase recovery capital and develop skills to achieve a sense of self-worth and meaningful membership in the community. 2014 bytheNumbers • Over 76,719 children, youth and adults were provided with our services. • 5,500 students participated in our multi-week prevention programs led by Recovery Resource Council Staff. • 35,719 of our clients were under the age of 12. • We provided 51 formerly homeless people with housing and support services. • Volunteers donated over 6,490 hours of their time to Recovery Resource Council. • Our Prevention Services reached 63,784 youth and 9,183 adults in our community. • Our information and referral department received over 14,498 phone calls from clients and family members in need of assistance due to substance abuse. - 6. At the beginning of this Annual Report, our Board Chair Michael Cuda focused on the theme of Opportunities Seized by the Council in FY 2014. I want to note that behind every opportunity the Council seized this year, there were true friends of the Council supporting the work and efforts of our staff, Board and volunteers who strive to enhance and save lives and create second chances. Our attempt to list in this annual report all who invested in our mission, “To promote wellness and recovery from alcohol, addiction and mental health issues,” is an effort to again say thank you and to express that we see this support as a blessing that warms our hearts with gratitude. So often when a donation or foundation check arrives at the Council there is a visible moment of joy expressed by the ringing of a bell or a happy dance. This excitement is grounded in our awareness that this investment provides strength to our capacity to serve the children, youth, families, individuals, veterans and formerly homeless who face the challenges of life and are burdened by the weight of consequences resulting from substance abuse or mental health concerns. If you could spend time walking beside our staff and many volunteers as they work, you would be amazed at the quality of services and care provided and their love and compassion for others. Recovery Resource Council is a uniquely qualified provider of behavioral health outpatient services. There are over 4,000 large and small Tarrant County non-profits listed by the State of Texas, excluding primary care hospitals who are all accredited. The Council is one of less than 20 nonprofits that are accredited by a nationally recognized health organization such as Joint Commission on Accredi- tation. I want to thank all of you who took advantage of the opportunities in 2014 to get involved and support the Council. By reading this Annual Report as a donor, volunteer, Board member, or interested party, it demonstrates your interest in keeping up with the work of the Council.
