In partnership withThe LasVegas (NV) Chapter ofThe Links, Incorporated, the 2016 candidates propose an immersive experience for the 4th grade students at Kermit Roosevelt Booker Elementary School. The three week session will use the lessons and concepts ofThe Wiz to introduce students to creative dance and expression. •Lion - Stepping •Scarecrow - African Dance •Tin Man - Popping •Dorothy - Poetry/Song

PROGRAM OVERVIEW 3 • During the three week period, 4th grade Physical Education will be replaced with sessions with Molodi Artists. • At the end of the three week period, students will participate in a joint performance with Molodi artists. • Positively Arts sponsored performance atThe Plaza with Molodi Artists and Booker Elementary School Students on April 24th. - Sound Check 3:00 - 4:00 PM - Door Open 4:30 PM - Show - 5:00 - 7:00 PM • Encore Performance at Booker Elementary School on Monday,April 25th. - Assembly 1:00 – 2:10 - Lunch out side . . . let the kids go outside to eat - Dismiss from Multi Purpose Room

- 6. PROGRAM ELEMENTS 6 Self Esteem & Self Awareness Allow students to perform and showcase their work and talent, building self confidence and esteem. Arts Appreciation Through partnerships, create opportunities to allow arts education to continue through a series of opportunities beyond the classroom setting. (i.e. Smith Center, Molodi, Nevada Arts Council, etc.) Teacher Development Provide teachers with additional tools to help engage students, building self esteem, awareness of the arts, and appreciation for their unique gifts and talents. Education Thru Arts Expression Create a program that allows students to learn key lessons thru self expression and sharing with their classmates.
- 8. THE CONCEPT The Wiz made Broadway history in 1975 when it transformed The Wonderful Wizard of Oz into a celebration of African American culture. Without changing the main characters, plot, or themes,TheWiz reimagined the story from an African American perspective, adding soul music, style, and a fresh, funky twist to the beloved classic. 8
- 9. THE CONCEPT 9 Using the story of The Wiz as a frame of reference, 4th grade students will work with teachers and the Molodi dancers to create a visual story of their JourneyToThe Emerald City. Teachers will be given a resource guide and students will work with Molodi artists during their Physical Education period.
- 10. THE CONCEPT 10 Where Is Home Dorothy sings about her wish to return home in the song Home.Think about your own home. How would you finish the first line of Dorothy’s song? When I think of home . . . Believe In Yourself What doesThe Wiz teach us about the power of believing in yourself? What happens in the story to make Dorothy and her friends believe in themselves? How do they learn to stop focusing on what they want and look inside themselves instead to and the power they’ve had all along? Relate this to a personal experience.
- 11. THE CONCEPT 11 Believe In Your Future Write a poem/draw a picture from the future in which you describe how believing in yourself helped you get something you wanted. Maybe it helped you get a college degree. Maybe it helped you succeed in sports or get your dream job. Maybe it helped you become President of the United States! Let your hopes and dreams tell you what you can be, and imagine how believing in yourself could make those dreams come true.

INCORPORATING ALL FACETS 12 FACET APPROACH SERVICES TO YOUTH The introduction of Dance and Creative Expression to students promotes the integration of a health and wellness component focused on youth, THE ARTS This program creates an opportunity to educate minority youth in the arts and gives them the opportunity to perform with accomplished professional artists in a diversity of disciplines. NATIONAL TRENDS & SERVICES Bullying is a growing crisis and this program helps reinforceThe Links’ comprehensive community anti-bullying program by enhancing the student’s ability to avoid victimization and increasing their’ self-esteem. INTERNATIONAL TRENDS & SERVICES This program will supportThe Links initiative to broaden our International Trends and Services platform for programs designed to service the educational and cultural needs of people of African descent by creating and documenting the experience and sharing it with the adopted school in Africa. HEALTH & HUMAN SERVICES One of the goals of HHS is to promote and facilitate programs that support the maintenance of good health. This program does promotes dance and movement and First Lady Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move Initiative.

THE LINKS, INCORPORATED 14 The outstanding programming of The Links, Incorporated has five facets which include - 1.Services toYouth 2.The Arts 3.NationalTrends and Services 4.InternationalTrends & Services 5.Health & Human Services. The programs are implemented through strategies such as public information and education, economic development, and public policy campaigns. The Links, Incorporated is an international, not-for-profit corporation, established in 1946.The membership consists of nearly 14,000 professional women of color in 282 chapters located in 41 states, the District of Columbia and the Commonwealth of the Bahamas. It is one of the nation’s oldest and largest volunteer service organizations of extraordinary women who are committed to enriching, sustaining and ensuring the culture and economic survival of African Americans and other persons of African ancestry.

THE SMITH CENTER The mission ofThe Smith Center is “To provide and preserve a high-quality performing arts center that is embraced by the community and recognized as a vital force by supporting artistic excellence, education and inspiration for all.” It is the mission of The Smith Center’s Education and Outreach Department to build life-long memories by offering high-quality arts experiences for students, teachers, and the community. 16

LET’S MOVE Let’s Move! is a comprehensive initiative, launched by the First Lady Michelle Obama, to solving the problem of obesity within a generation, so that children born today will grow up healthier and able to pursue their dreams. At the launch of this initiative, President Barack Obama signed a Presidential Memorandum creating the first-everTask Force on Childhood Obesity to conduct a review of every single program and policy relating to child nutrition and physical activity and develop a national action plan to maximize federal resources and set concrete benchmarks toward the First Lady’s national goal.TheTask Force recommendations focus on the five pillars of the First Lady’s Let’s Move! initiative: 1. Creating a healthy start for children 2. Empowering parents and caregivers 3. Providing healthy food in schools 4. Improving access to healthy, affordable foods 5. Increasing physical activity 17

NEVADA ARTS COUNCIL • The Nevada Arts Council’s mission is “to enrich the cultural life of the state through leadership that preserves, supports, strengthens and makes accessible excellence in the arts for all Nevadans.” • Nevada Arts Council programs serve as a catalyst to stimulate artistic, cultural and economic activity across the state, animate its breadth of communities, ensure lifelong learning in the arts for all Nevadans, and to encourage public and private support for the arts. 18
- 19. MOLODI 19 MOLODI is a performance ensemble that takes body percussion to the extreme. Using only their bodies as instruments, Molodi blends collegiate stepping, tap, gumboots, beatbox, poetry and hip hop dance with guerrilla theatre and robust personalities that bring to life a high-energy rhythmic experience. Their flagship program for schools and organizations. Gimmie Some Mo’ brings the full MOLODI crew into schools for an up close and personal experience with the artists.The program includes several high-energy performance pieces from MOLODI’s repertoire with insight into the cultural histories of the dances and inspirational stories from the artists. It’s an interactive stepping workshop that gets everybody up of their feet and moving beginning with a fun, rhythmic warm up and culminating in a competitive Step Show challenge between the students. The workshop finishes with a question & answer session and final encore performance. "RHYTHM IS AN INFECTIOUS AND NATURAL ELEMENT OF LIFE. MOLODI IS ITS MESSENGER."

POSITIVELY ARTS FOUNDATION 20 Inspired by the belief that the arts can heal as well as be a learning tool, Positively Arts Foundation, Inc. was established in 2011 as an independent 501(c)(3) non- profit Nevada corporation. The mission of the Foundation is to create a new mode of learning that uses arts integration to raise student achievement.We aim to mobilize our community of Las Vegas leaders, professionals and working artists to take a greater interest in the role of the arts in enhancing education and in being a tool for healing. In our current economic crisis, funding for the arts are the first thing to be stripped away from schools.The Foundation intends to put the arts back in a way that not only enriches the minds of students, but also helps teachers attain classroom goals by aligning with common core standards. Currently the 5th largest school district in the nation, the Clark County School District is in dire need of this arts integration funding.
- 22. 22 Digital Photobook Digital photo book will include, imagery, poetry, and artwork that takes the reader through the 2 month experience. Load phonebook, additional images and video on tablet and deliver to partners, etc. (TBD) Photo Booth Allow participants to capture their own “JourneyToThe Emerald City” moments and share on Social Media. Electronic Presentation Candidates will present the overall concept, journey an highlights of the experience and focus on next steps and how to continue the learning beyond this experience. Include images an video clips Display Board Experience Visual display representing the student’s and candidates’ journey through this process.
