- 3. 1 Letter from the Church Secretary Dear all, As I write this letter the sun is shining and the garden is alive. I wandered down to the pond and there is frog-spawn all waiting to burst forth with new life. New life; the miracle of God's creation, there for us all to look at and marvel at. I love this time of year as I watch for baby birds and butterflies emerge. I have seen my first butterfly this year, the sulphur yellow brimstone, so beautiful and fragile. I am looking forward to a new great niece, a totally new character, unique, amazing. God has given us so much to admire, nurture and protect. So as we enjoy all that is fresh and new, let us give thanks to our Almighty Creator, the one true God, bountiful and generous in His amazing creation. With Christian love to you all Mavis
- 4. 2 Sunday Services Some notes on the visiting preachers. v Tony Russell is very well known to us. He is a long-standing member of HFC. v Sonia Weston has taken a number of services at HFC. v John Cox is known to us, having conducted services at HFC in the past. v Alan Kienlan is well known to us. He was church secretary and an elder at HFC. He is an accredited Lay Preacher from Emmanuel URC. v Rev’d Martin Knight is to be inducted to serve St Paul’s URC, South Croydon in June of this year. He is excited to share in worship with us as he learns more about churches in the area. v Keith Nye is one of the readers from St. Mary’s Church at Plaistow Green. v Mrs Judy Davies is well known to us. She has conducted services at HFC on a number of occasions. All of the evening services will take place in the Elders Vestry which is accessed from side door in Hilldown Road. Church Meetings The next Elders’ meetings (Tuesdays) will be at 8.00 pm in the small hall on the 5th of April and the 3rd of May. The next Church meeting will be after the morning service at 12.00 noon on the 24th of April. Women's Contact Group The contact group will hold their monthly lunches at the Tea Room in Hayes on Mondays at 12.30 pm. We will be meeting on the 4th of April. All ladies are welcome. Sylvia Mack Saturday Fellowship We will be meeting at 2.30 pm on the 2nd of April at Barbara’s home - 133, Pickhurst Lane. The leader is Martin Nunn. You are welcome to join us. Please address any queries to Martin Nunn. House Church We have a house church at my house - 133, Pickhurst Lane. It normally takes place on the third Wednesday in the month at 7.30 pm. So, for April we will be matting on the 20th. Anyone who would like to join us is welcome. Barbara Men's Group The next Men’s Group meeting will be on Thursday 21st of April in the small hall at 8.00 pm and will be a Games Night organised by John Thompson.
- 6. 4 Ministry of Flowers Thank you to those who will be providing flowers in April. A big thank you to those who kindly arrange the flowers when needed. After the Sunday morning services, the flowers are distributed to members and friends, bringing joy to the recipients. Mavis Righini Hayes Mothers’ & Toddlers’ Club We welcome all babies and children under school age, accompanied by their parents, grandparents or carers, to our club on Friday afternoons between 2 and 4pm during term time. The fee is £1 per family – tea, squash and biscuits are provided. This is a time when adults can meet up, while the children in their care are busy playing with toys and activities in the company of other children. Summer term starts on the 18th of April. Our first session will be on Friday the 22nd of April Wendy Smith Messy Church This meets on the 4th Wednesday of every month in the church from 3.30 - 4.30 pm, and children from 2 to 12 years are welcome. Book Club We will be meeting at 7.30 pm on Thursday, 7th of April and then on Thursday, 5th of May. - 7. 5 Women's Fellowship Meetings are in the small hall at 2.00 p.m., unless otherwise stated, on Tuesdays and finish about 3.30 p.m. For April: - We start back on the 19th when the subject will be Memories of Hayes Past. Then on the 26th we will be having a Beetle Drive. MINI-AMBULANCE Members who use this service are asked to phone Marion Swanborough on 8462 3981 by 9.00 am on any Tuesday when they are unable to come to the meetings. As always, we welcome all ladies to our meetings. Please come along for a pleasant afternoon. We do have a very varied programme with plenty to interest everyone. Air Traffic Control Communications with Pilots A student became lost during a solo cross-country flight. While attempting to locate the aircraft on radar, ATC asked, "What was your last known position?" Student: "When I was number one for takeoff." --------------------------------------- From an unknown aircraft waiting in a very long takeoff queue: "I'm bored!" Ground Traffic Control: "Last aircraft transmitting, identify yourself immediately!" Unknown aircraft: "I said I was bored, not stupid!"
- 8. 6 Women’s Contact Coffee Morning We will be holding the next coffee mornings from 10.00am to 12.00 noon in the Small Hall on the 9th of April and the 14th of May. We are continuing to raise monies to contribute to disaster relief funds in different parts of the world. We hope to see you at the Coffee Morning, and why not bring a friend? Please note that the monies raised from the coffee mornings are separate from those raised through the refreshments trolley after Sunday morning services. Barbara Jones The Fairtrade Sunday Stall We hold a fair trade stall after the morning service on the 2nd and 4th Sunday of each month. The stall will be held on the 10th and 24th of April. Do pop by and check what we have for sale. There are some appetising snacks, along with the usual food and non-food lines. We will also be ordering some new lines of cake and hope that they will be available in April. Please continue to support your stall. Richard and Barbara. Editor’s Notes First of all, may I offer my apologies if Catalyst is a little late in reaching you. March has proved to be extremely busy, and with Easter falling early, this has all placed pressure on producing Catalyst in time and with coverage of all events, etc. I am repeating last month’s notes. However, you are invited to make some new contributions to Catalyst: - 1) At her last service, Sue suggested that you send in prayers for inclusion in Catalyst. - 9. 7 Refurbished treatment suite officially opened Over 70 guests .... attended the official opening of the newly refurbished Treatment Suite in the Chartwell Cancer & Leukaemia Unit at the Princess Royal University Hospital, Farnborough, Kent on Thursday 17th March, 17.30 pm. The refurbishment represents one of the latest projects for The Chartwell Cancer Trust and has been made possible because of the generous donations from local businesses and individuals who pledged their support at the start of the project in late 2014. The remodelled suite includes 10 dedicated bays for giving patients’ chemotherapy treatment, all equipped with large comfortable chairs and plenty of space for staff to treat patients and for family, friends and carers to sit with the patients if necessary. The refurbishment also included the installation of air conditioning, to keep the temperature comfortable throughout the year, especially in the summer when it can become very hot within the unit. .... the remodeling of the whole area, including bringing the reception area forward, has .... further improved privacy for patients. In addition, Wi-Fi has been installed to enable patients to use their own electronic items. In short, the re-modelling and refurbishment has made better use of the space available, provides a much improved working environment for the staff and improved dignity of patients undergoing treatment, making their experience as comfortable as possible. - 10. 8 Trustees Michael Douglas, Gile Juttla and Bobby Beech, along with Natalie Reilly, Director of The CCT’s FUNdraising Magazine and manager at the head office in Tatsfield, proudly presented the Chartwell Unit with a cheque for £80,000, the cost of the refurbishment. Accepting the cheque on behalf of the team at the unit, Anne Duffy, Head of Nursing, said: “On behalf of the team here, I would like to say thank you to The Chartwell Cancer Trust and all those who contributed to the refurbishment.” In response, Trustee Michael Douglas said “The Chartwell Cancer Trust exists to support the medical teams that run the Unit. We have been funding additional staff since 2005 and last year agreed an additional funding package of over £350,000 to cover the cost of 1.5 additional Cancer Nurse Specialist positions. It is our intention to continue to support the Doctors and Nurses in every way that we can ....”. ....... The CCT, was founded in 2005 by the Trustees to raise funds to give financial support to the Chartwell Cancer & Leukaemia Unit. At the time, Michael himself was undergoing treatment within the Unit ..... The Trust’s aim is simple; to supply funding to increase staffing levels in the unit and to provide other support, where appropriate, that will enhance and improve the patients’ care while being treated in the unit. There is ........ our sister charity, the CCT Tiger Ward, which supports the children’s Tiger Ward at the Woolwich Hospital ....... The Trust’s latest venture is to link up with and support the Frog Ward, the children’s cancer ward at the Croydon University Hospital. Following the very successful format for the BCCGS, Frog Ward has set up the Croydon Childhood Cancer Support Group, which The CCT will be supporting. - 14. 12 CHRISTMAS TREE FESTIVAL 2016 CHARITY TO BE SUPPORTED The charity to be supported by our 2016 festival is due to be chosen by members at the church meeting of Sunday 24th April. Four charities have been put forward, and a little information about each appears below. Carers Bromley (www.carersbromley.org.uk) The aim of Carers Bromley is to support unpaid carers of all ages in the London Borough of Bromley. It does this by providing them with various forms of support; information and access to services. The main areas covered are as follows: - Legal and financial advice, including how to claim benefits or allowances to which carers, or those they care for, are entitled - Dedicated support for Young Carers, including activities, health advice, breaks and holidays and a discussion forum - Respite services for carers - A wide range of support groups, including specialist advice on dealing with particular conditions (such as dementia), or situations (such as leaving hospital) These are only the most obvious areas – there are many other ways in which the charity can give specific help as it is needed. Bromley Mencap (www.bromleymencap.org.uk) Bromley Mencap provides a wide range of services open to disabled people of all ages. Families and carers are also supported. Areas covered include a telephone advice service, child minding and res- pite care, with leisure activities and help for older carers – but also employment training, along with support and help in finding and sustaining jobs. Bromley Mencap is currently raising funds for a project in this last area. They are planning to refurbish a building in Norman Park, donated by Bromley Council, which will then be used as an enterprise centre, providing training and opportunities in catering, bike recycling and horticulture. They have a target of £80,000 and at time of writing (early March) have raised £33,000. NOTE: The charity merged with Bromley Scope in 2010 (this was a local arrangement only; Bromley Scope was a small charity, independent of the national charity Scope, which has continued unaffected). At that time Bromley Mencap widened its remit so that it now offers support to Continued on the next page ......
- 15. 13 all disabled people across the borough, regardless of the nature of the disability. Bromley & District Parkinson’s Branch (www.parkinsons.org.uk) The Bromley branch sits within the national society supporting people suffering from Parkinson’s disease. It was established over 40 years ago to provide friendship and support to people with Parkinson's and to their carers. There are currently in excess of 140 members; many of them utilise the meetings, day trips and other activities which the branch provides at subsidised rates and in many cases free of charge. These are some examples of the group’s regular activities: · Monthly group meeting at St George’s Church, Bickley · Monthly drop-in meetings in Beckenham and Orpington · Approx. two coach trips each year (recent trips included Wisley and Arundel) · Weekly t’ai chi sessions in Beckenham · Short mat bowls four times a month (at two locations in Beckenham) · Weekly sailing at Chipstead Lake · Regular walks for carers · Indoor bowls once a week at Orpington NOTE: This charity was supported by the Christmas Tree Festival in 2011. Anglican Society for the Welfare of Animals (ASWA) (www.aswa.org.uk) Although founded by Anglicans, ASWA provides a focus for Christians of all denominations to work for the welfare of animals, on the basis that care for all God’s creatures is part of Christian discipleship. Much of its work is in education, and it encourages churches to pay serious atten- tion to the welfare of animals, and to issues of the day involving them, for example by including prayers for animals in church services. ASWA also campaigns, often alongside secular organisations, against the human exploitation of animals. NOTE: I am told there is a local group and at time of writing I await confirmation that it would be possible to ring-fence any money raised for local use, and also information about how it would be used in a local setting. ....... - 17. 15 A SPECIAL POEM FOR OLDER FOLKS A row of bottles on my shelf Caused me to analyze myself. One yellow pill I have to pop Goes to my heart so it won't stop.? A little white one that I take Goes to my hands so they won't shake. The blue ones that I use a lot Tell me I'm happy when I'm not. The purple pill goes to my brain And tells me that I have no pain.? The capsules tell me not to wheeze Or cough or choke or even sneeze.. The red ones, smallest of them all Go to my blood so I won't fall. The orange ones, very big and bright Prevent my leg cramps in the night. Such an array of brilliant pills Helping to cure all kinds of ills. But what I'd really like to know... Is what tells each one where to go!
- 18. 16 The way things once were The food theme continues this year with recipes from the First World War. Hopefully, a useful collection will develop throughout the year. The source of the recipes is the “Win-the-war” cookery book. Editor Surrey Stew Recipe for four people One pound of stewing or any lean beef Two carrots A small bunch of herbs Seasoning to taste Flour to thicken One tablespoonful of butter, dripping, nutter, or margarine Two onions (sliced thinly) One turnip Two cloves Season a tablespoonful of flour - maize, pea, rice, rye, or any other flour, except wheat - with plenty of pepper and salt. Cut the vegetables into dice. Melt the fat in a casserole, and when hot put in the meat, cut into convenient pieces, and dipped in the seasoned flour. When the meat is golden brown, take it out and put in the onion. Fry this lightly, and stir in with it any flour left over from coating the meat. Now replace the meat and add the rest of the vegetables. Add the herbs and cloves, if these are liked. Pour in a breakfastcupful and a half of warm water (more if liked), cover the casserole closely, and put it in a moderate oven for two and a half to three hours. The stew can be simmered over the fire, if care is taken to prevent burning. Add seasoning to taste before serving, and take out the herbs.
