Introduction
• Biggest EHR Challenges for 2018
– Cybersecurity
– Interoperability
– Clinician Burnout
• Present article written by Bill Siwicky on HealthcareIT news.
• Suggest solutions to these challenges based on research
Cybersecurity
• In the first half of 2017, the
healthcare industry had experienced a
total of 228 data breaches,
representing 25% of the total number
of breaches worldwide.
(Cybersecurity in Healthcare 2018-
2030)
• HIPAA Compliance
• Safeguarding of EHR
• Restrict internet access
• Artificial intelligence (AI), machine
learning and deep learning techniques
Interoperability
• Review current interoperability
strategies
• Revise them to be more inclusive
• Health information exchanges (HIEs)
• MyHealthEData Initiative by CMS
• Approach healthcare data from the
patient perspective
• Streamline meaningful use
• Prioritize quality measures
• Prevent information blocking
Clinician Burnout
• NEJM catalyst found that 96% of
executives and clinicians agree that
physician burnout is a serious problem
• Problem of information overload and
clinician burnout with EHRs
• EHR consumer experience team
• Redesign EHR systems to align better
with physician workflow
• Use scribes for certain documentation
tasks
• ‘relaxing’ or ‘time out’ zone to take a
break

Editor's Notes

  • #2: Hello Ladies and Gentleman, My name is Dr. Sapan Patel and I am an MHA Student at Penn State Harrisburg. I am going to present 2018 biggest EHR challenges in this video.
  • #3: An article written by Bill Siwicky on HealthcareIT news mentioned cybersecurity, Interoperability and clinician burnout as biggest EHR challanges. I am going to provide my view on this challenges and suggest solutions based on evidence-based latest research.
  • #4: The digital revolution has transformed the way businesses operate across the globe. However, digitally stored information is prone to hacking and manipulation by cyber criminals. The Ponemon Institute's Fifth Annual Study reported that cyberattacks in healthcare have increased by a factor of 125% since 2010. In the first half of 2017, the healthcare industry had experienced a total of 228 data breaches, representing 25% of the total number of breaches worldwide. Cybersecurity will be a top challenge in 2018 when it comes to EHRs. Keeping data safe in HIPAA compliant manner, Educating staff on the proper use of hospital systems and placing safeguards within EHR to limit the amount of data accessible is a good start to overcome this challenge. It will be the most crucial step to restrict internet access to certain sites and applications to enhance cybersecurity. In the end, AI, machine learning and deep learning techniques can bolster cybersecurity for combating the ever-increasing threat landscape.
  • #5: Another major challenge facing EHRs in 2018 is interoperability. Systems should exchange data from outside resources as mentioned in this figure. It will start with reviewing current strategies and revising them to be more inclusive so that data can be shared by hospitals. Health information exchange [HIE] is a dynamic and evolving landscape. It is critical for enabling interoperability and meaningful use of health IT. CMS recently announced MyHealthEData Initiative that will put patients at the Center of the US Healthcare System. Patients will have access to their full healthcare records and can take it with them from doctor to doctor. Streamlining Meaningful Use and Quality Payment programs will increase the focus on interoperability and reduce resources required to comply with them. CMS will prioritize the use of quality metrics and improvement activities linking interoperability to value-based care . CMS is also taking steps against information blocking (a practice in which providers prevent patients from getting their data).
  • #6: NEJM Catalyst performed Leadership Survey about Why Physician Burnout Is Endemic, and How Health Care Must Respond. They found that 96% of executives and clinicians agree that it is a serious problem. CIOs and other executives should put themselves in the physician’s shoes to solve the age-old problem of information overload and clinician burnout with EHRs. One of the ways to overcome this challenge is to fund an EHR consumer experience team. They work with the staff to help them understand the workflows, build out shortcuts, and report back to the EHR analysts on any issues. Another approach is that professional organizations should lobby to reduce regulations for medical documentation and other clerical work. We can also utilize scribes for documentation task. It’s a good idea to create a ‘relaxing’ or ‘time out’ zone so we can avoid one physician suicide per day due to burnout..
  • #7: That’s all I have for 2018 EHR challenges. If you need more information on this topic, then go through these references. If you have any questions, please reach out to me on my LinkedIn page linkedin.com/drsapan4patel. Thank you for your time.
