Ch 2-1 Classifying Matter Composition means a putting together.  Materials are classified as  pure substances  or  mixtures
Pure Substance A  fixed  uniform  composition  that has the same properties throughout Elements A pure substance that cannot be broken down Contains only one atom
Compounds Two or more element joined in fixed proportion Elemental symbols Au-gold, N-nitrogen, C-carbon, H-hydrogen
Mixtures Composition is not fixed properties can vary Heterogeneous mixture parts are noticeably different Homogeneous mixture parts are evenly distributed
Solutions, Suspensions,& Colloids Classified by the size of the particle Clear liquid= solution Particles settle out=suspension Opaque liquid= colloid
