21. Predicting Products Explain why the hydration reaction involving 1-butene might yield two
distinct products, whereas the hydration of 2-butene yields only one product. List the type of
organic reaction needed to perform each of the following transformations. a. b. alkyl halide
alcohol c. alkvl halidealkene Classify each of the following organic reactions as sub- stitution,
addition, oxidation-reduction elimination, or condensation. a. 2-butene + hydrogenbutane b.
propane + fluorine -2-fluoropropane hydrogen fluoride c. 2-propanol - propene +water d.
cyclobutene + water - cyclobutanol
Solution
1-butene is an unsymmetrical alkene (alkene double bond is between 1 st
and 2 nd
carbon atom of
four carbon chain) and its hydration products are a mixture of 2-butanol and 1-butanol with
major product being 2-butanol (Zaitsev product) whereas 2-butene is a symmetrical alkene
(alkene double bond is between 2 nd
and 3 rd
carbon atom of four carbon chain) whose hydration
product is one and only 2-butanol.
Type of organic reaction
a.) alkene to alkane --------> Hydrogenation reaction (addition of double bond)
b.) alkyl halide to alcohol ---------> Nucleophilic substitution reaction (R-X bond converted to R-
OH bond)
c.) alkyl halide to alkene ---------> Dehydrohalogenation reaction
Classify the organic reaction
a.) Addition reaction (addition of H 2 )
b.) substitution reaction (substitution of one fluorine molecule with one hydrogen molecule)
c.) oxidation reduction elimination reaction (elimination of water)
d.) addition reaction (addition of H 2 O)
