Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday
I. OBJECTIVES
Differentiate comets and
asteroids;
Determine the different
characteristics of comets and
asteroids;
NATIONAL
ACHIEVEMENT
TEST
Determine Near-Earth Objects
(NEO);
Identify the place of origin of
comets and asteroids;
Explain the Alvarez hypothesis
about asteroids
Describe the changes that happens to a fragment from a
comet or asteroid as it enters Earth’s atmosphere;
Represent the relationship between a meteoroid, meteor,
and meteorite using a diagram
A .Content Standards The learners demonstrate an understanding of the characteristics of comets, meteors and asteroids.
B .Performance
Standards
The learners shall be able to discuss whether or not beliefs and practices about comets and meteors have scientific basis.

III. LEARNING TASKS
A. Elicit
Story telling
-Call three to four volunteers
to share about what they
know or a past experience
about comets, asteroids, or
meteors based on recent
events.
Challenge the students by
posing the question:
Why do you think asteroid can
be seen more on Earth more
often than comets?
Call some volunteers to give
their idea on how asteroids and
meteors are related.
Continuation of Activity
2
B. Engage
Relate the stories given by
the students to the new
lesson
Call volunteers to give a short
discussion on Asteroid 2012
DA14
Discuss to the student the
procedure of their activity.
C. Explore
Using visual aids, discuss the
differences between comets
and asteroids.
Explain to the students the
location of the place of origin of
comets and asteroids.
Explain to the students the
objective of Activity #2
D. Explain
Give the Venn Diagram
activity found in the Pre/Post
test part at the end of this TG.
Ask the students to relate its
location to its orbital year.
Let the student perform Activity
#2 on learners manual.
E. Elaborate
Call representatives from
each group to present their
answers and explain as
necessary.
Tell the groups to prepare a
table with three columns (as
shown below) and write the
following words on each
column: comet, asteroid, and
meteor.
Group ________
What we know about…
Comets Asteroids
Discussion of the
answers on Guide
Questions.
F. Evaluate
Scientist continuously looking
for evidences of dinosaur
existence.
Pair Work:
Let the students work with a
partner in answering the guide
questions.
G. Extend
The composition of a comet is
important in helping
scientists understand how
Earth has liquid water, which
in turn made the planet
livable. The chemical
composition of an asteroid is
important in providing clues
for scientists to discover
more about the chemical
composition of Earth and the
Alvarez Hypothesis proposed
that an asteroid with
approximately 10 kilometers in
diameter made impact with
Earth 65 million years ago. They
thought that the impact caused
materials to be thrown up in air,
thus blocking sunlight, and
bringing about a period of
winter long enough to cause a
mass extinction of plants and
other planets in the Solar
System, as well as how life on
Earth was affected by impacts
in the past.
animals, including the dinosaurs.
