Introduction
 3D printing is a modern technology in which 3 dimensional
objects are printed from digital data
 Three dimensional object is created by laying down
successive layers of material
 3D printing technology is also known as Additive
manufacturing, where an object is created by adding layer
by layer
History
 The 3D printing technology was first developed by Chuck
Hull in 1984
 He named the technique as Stereo lithography and
obtained a patent for the technique in 1986
 He also develop the STL format widely accepted for 3D
printing
Stages of 3D printing
Modeling
 A 3D image of the item to be printed is produced
by using a Computer Assisted Design(CAD)
software.
 The 3D model files should be exported to the 3D
printing machine in standard format .STL
 The exported file will be a mesh(series of
triangles oriented in space)
Printing
 The STL file exported will be processed using
slicing software.
 KISSlicer( Keep it simple slicer), Slic3r is an
example of slicing software.
 It cuts the model into horizontal slices (layers),
generates tool paths(G code files) for the
movement of print heads.
 Printing of the model.
Finishing
 The finishing work depends on the method which
the 3D model is manufactured.
Different Methods
• Stereo lithography
• Selective laser sintering (SLS)
• Fused deposition modeling (FDM)
Stereolithography
 Stereolithography is a 3D printing technology.
 It employs liquid curable resign and an UV laser
to builds parts.
 Using the UV laser beam the first cross section of
the STL file is drawn in to the vat of photo
polymer resign.
 The platform will be lowered so that the fresh
layer of resin will cover the build surface
 The next layer is traced out curing and bonding
the resin to the layer below
 The process is repeated layer by layer until the
model is fully grown.

Selective laser sintering
 Selective laser sintering (DMLS) is an 3D printing
technique that create metal parts powders of metal,
alloy material such as stainless steel to create
models.
 A pre-programed assembly will supply powder on the
base platform to create a uniform layer of powder.
 A laser then draws a 2D cross section on the surface
of building material by heating and fusing the material
to a solid mass.
 Then the base platform will be lowered
 Then next layer of powder will be supplied
 The process will continue till the model is completed
3 d printing slide
Fused deposition modeling (FDM)
• FDM is a 3D printing technique that uses
thermoplastic materials to produce models.
• Thin thread like spools of thermoplastic and
support material are used to create each cross
section of the product
• The materials will be slowly extruded through the
nozzle.
• The nozzle will precisely place the material
• After finishing the first layer the base platform will
be moved down
• Process is repeated till the model is completed

Manufacturing of PMMA Cam
Shaft by Rapid Prototyping
 RP is an additive manufacturing process in which
a three dimensional product or component is
produced from a three dimensional design using
computer aided design (CAD) software in a very
short period of time.
 CAM shaft which produced through the existing
ways which requires a lot of power, space, cost
and time
Modification has to be done in SLS machine in
order to adapt for the mass production
The strength of the laser beam is
increased so increased amount of
material can be increased
They increase the number of laser tool
so that an increased amount of cam shaft
can be produced in a single layer
3 d printing slide
 Under deep analysis they have selected poly
(methyl methacrylate) PMMA instead of
conventionally used cast iron.
 By using the 3D printing technology for the
production of the cam shaft, it is able to gain
the following advantages,
(a) Increased productivity
(b) Less time
(c) Less space
(d) No wastage of the materials
SOME APPLICATIONS
Rapid manufacturing
 Manufacturing through 3D printing found to be
less expensive than other manufacturing.
 Advances in 3D printing technology have
introduced materials that are appropriate for final
manufacture
End use parts
3D printing is capable of building the most
durable, stable, and repeatable parts in the
industry, whose accuracy can be compared
with injection molding.
Medical field
 Printing organs such as kidney, fingers, etc
House printing
 A chineese company winzoon built 10 houses in a
day using large 3D printers
Aerospace
 Aerospace engineers rely on patented FDM
Technology for prototyping, tooling and part
manufacturing.
 In September 2014, SpaceX delivered the first
zero-gravity 3-D printer
 On December 19, 2014,NASA emailed CAD
drawings for a socket wrench to astronauts
aboard the International Space Station (ISS),
who then printed the tool using its 3-D printer
Conclusions
3D printing technology has the potential for the
better manufacturing of products
3D printing has a lot of possible benefits to society,
although the products created must be regulated.
3D printing technology can be effectively used for
the mass production.
