 The third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) has initiated
to develop a 3GPP- WLAN interworking architecture to allow
3GPP service providers to offload data traffic from wide area
wireless spectrum to WLANs in indoor locations, hotspots,
and other areas with high user density.
 3GPP-WLAN interworking scenario enables the subscriber to
access 3GPP PS services through the WLAN access gateway
(WAG) and Packet data gateway (PDG).
 The main driver is to enable 3GPP system operators to
provide WLAN access as an integral component of their total
service offering to cellular subscriber.

 QoS refers to the ability to deliver network services according
to the parameters specified in SLA.
 At network resource level :
◦ Prioritize traffic
◦ Control bandwidth
◦ Network latency
◦ Delay Management
◦ Packet loss rate
 Policy based QOS solution is adopted by the 3GPP for
ensuring that sufficient QoS resources are provided to the
authorized users in the network

 Integrated 3G/WLAN Network with all-IP
UMTS
 IEEE 802.11e standard provides QoS features and
multimedia support to the existing 802.11b and
802.11a standards, while maintaining full
backward compatibility with them.
 IEEE 802.11e MAC employs a channel access
function, called Hybrid Coordination Function
(HCF), which includes a contention-based channel
access and a contention-free centrally controlled
channel access mechanism.
